10 Years eh!

At around this time of day 10 years ago today we arrived at my wife's mothers home on the Asia side of Istanbul. Exhausted by a very long days travel from Stansted airport in Essex.

We had made a decision about a year earlier to sell up in the UK and emigrate to Turkey. Our departure date was to be determined by the sale date of our house. Over the course of the year ahead we slowly liquidated our assets, wound up our business and visited friends and relatives to say our goodbyes. Eventually we found a buyer who was ready to meet our asking price and set the wheels in motion. We found a shipper to move all our stuff over to Turkey, they determined that we would need a forty foot container to do the job. They first took all of the big stuff into storage leaving us with the bare essentials, my wife decided that she was more qualified to take care of the remaining arrangements so I took a step backwards. Anyway the long and short of it all was that we were left with far too much luggage on travel day, when I asked why she told me if it rained we needed raincoats, if it snowed we needed sheepskins plus we were bound to need plenty of smalls until the container arrived in Turkey, etc. etc.

The cost to take all this excess baggage was going to cost hundreds, what to do? We determined that two extra tickets was actually cheaper than the excess baggage charge so we took two of our friends for a four day holiday to Istanbul.

Oh yes, the long exhausting travel on that day ten years ago. Unnoticed by us with all that was going on there had been a massive storm building since the 15th January which eventually swept over the whole of northern Europe ending on the 25th, I only found out a few days ago it was named Kyrill and is a normal occurrence at this time of year but only a once in a lifetime storm of the proportions that we saw. We watched for hours in Stansted as planes were being blown about all over the place before they were able to get down, some only after several attempts. We watched cargo containers sliding all over the apron and staff chasing after them in Land Rovers. By the time were were permitted to leave we were in a large backlog of flights.

All in the past now though and we are today celebrating ten years here. We have had a good experience here and see no other reason to think of exiting... except one.

A question KK.

How long did you stay in Turkey before visiting the UK? I done a "straight five years" before going back...............it felt really strange, massive changes that only I could see, my wife had been going back to the UK on a regular basis (a moth or six weeks at a time), she couldn't see what I could.

Anyway, a good post from you.

I wish you well.

Hmm, you've caught me unprepared with that question, I simply wasn't expecting it.

I have to say that there have not in fact been any lows at all. However the uncertainty of the future here is disturbing both of us, even though my wife is Turk. Highs, nothing dizzy that's for sure. I did come here to retire and live out my days here. I guess one of the biggest pluses for me is not ever having to count my money, I am not well off by any stretch of the imagination but the exchange rate and the cost of living have made for a smooth ride.

We have made some very solid friends here both Turk and foreigner. Our location is right in the middle of the Bodrum rock and it is easy to travel to any part quickly, it also gives us easy access to all the beach areas here too.

Spurs.

I have only been back twice for a total of 12 days, the first visit after three years. I can't say I noticed much change but the difference between Turkey and Britain was stark.

Is the uncertainty such that you would consider return to Blighty?

Re: 10 Years eh!

We're still celebrating our first decade here Philip, well I am anyway. My wife is watching TV with her sister. Short term we could escape in an emergency but UK long term, I'm not too sure.
We are working through the problems of health care in the USA.
The bigger worry now though in the present climate, would be if we sold up here, would we be able to get our money out or even ourselves for that matter. My wife tells me that I am too dramatic.... but she is worried too.

Re: 10 Years eh!

Well if you end up stuck there's daily flights with Turk Airlines Istanbul to Valencia.

You can crash with me and we can put the world to rights over Estrella instead of Efes

Re: 10 Years eh!

Now that is a tempting offer and my first choice was always Spain in the past. However, I will watch you swilling your Estrella whilst I clutch my Germans round a Fundador with a splash of Coke. It would be a long conversation though as I do tend to slur a little after my first drink.
