Thinking of buying something in the mountains. Probably a wreck to renovate.

Am I mad?

Re: Bulgaria

No Thurstan.

Not if you're prepared to do it yourself, or find good trustworthy locals who know what they're doing. Personally, I would steer clear of British Cowboys that are all Master Builders.??

Why the Mountains I ask.?? Does get pretty cold up there in Winter.

Re: Bulgaria

Yep...Been here 3yrs now, best move we ever made...people are soooo friendly, there is no red tape, you are left well alone by authorities , so long as you pay your electric, water and annual house tax (ours is 4 per year!!..lol) then you are left well alone, very relaxing, no crime and all the horror stories are not founded... feel more relaxed here as never felt that the last few years in Turkey....plus beer is 40p a pint...cant be bad!!!

Re: Bulgaria

Agreed Gazzer.

But, what we like about Bulgaria is the fact that you can do as much or as little as you want here, and you get a lot for your money. My wife also says to our family in the UK, that she feels much safer in Bulgaria than anytime over the last 15 years whether in the Turkey or the UK. Also, there is none of this "Keeping Up With the Jones's" here in BG.

If any Expats, are looking to relocate here, but still need their fix of Turkey (excuse the pun) then I recommend taking a look at the South Eastern part of BG, where you have the Turkish Border just down the road (in our case 31kms away) with the Turkish Markets of Edirne, and the Greek Border approx., 1hr - 1hr 30mins further down the road.

Re: Bulgaria

An interesting thread gone cold.

It would be interesting to know more about the food, the markets & unusual customs in your neck of the woods. Some pics would be nice.

(And bu99er anyone who says that this should be a Turkey only forum )

Re: Bulgaria

Hi Jaycey.

Sighhh.. Posting Photos on TLF. Been trying for over 2 years now still no closer to working it out.

Food here in Bulgaria (B.G.) especially in the villages is quite basic but very, good, fresh and cheap compared to the bigger cities/towns in B.G. for sure. Here in the S.E. of B.G. close to Edirne and the Turkish Border, Kavarma seems to be the most popular. Normally Pork, can also be Chicken, Lamb if you're lucky. Cooked in a clay pot, with tomatoes, onions, spices etc., Scrummy..

Markets - TBH. Nowhere near as good as the ones in Turkey. But the large supermarkets of Lidl, Billa, Kaufland are very well stocked, plus fresh and cheap. If you are in need of a your Turkish Market fix, then just pop across the Border approx., 25mins from where we live. Most of the clothes, shoes, carpets, and tools stalls in the markets are run by Turks over here..??????????

Here Jaycey check this out ...where folk dress up to see off any evil at the start of the year.
We have a similar tradition in Ireland called mummers or Wren Boys...ask Lawro, he will know all about it !

Re: Bulgaria

Bulgaria looks an amazing place

Friends have raved about it in the past and some have property there but some recently have become somewhat disenchanted

Partly down to reduction in flights from Ireland but one of them had repeated squatting in his property- an issue he says is not uncommon
