Re: Toll charges

As you enter onto the TEM there should be a office where you can purchase a Tem sticker for your car.

Re: Toll charges

France on toll roads is a bloody rip off. If your taking your time to get to Turkey then keep off their autobahns. They are also red hot on speeding, I got done there (own fault). Greek tolls are cheap. I do France, Switzerland (always stop there for a yodel), Italy, Greece, Turkey.
Satnav is a must.

Cheapest and quickest route is Dunkirk - Lille- Luxembourg- Nuremburg- Vienna- Budapest- -Belgrade- Nis- Sofia- Edirne(Turkey).

On that route the motorways are free until Austria after which you will need a vignette for Austria ( 8 Euros) and Hungary( approx 12 Euros). Serbian motorway is cash at toll barriers( 12 Euros total).
Bulgaria is an 8 euro vignette.
You can go motorway all the way to Turkey bar a 40 mile break from Nis to Sofia.

My advice, if you can, is to come off the motorway and take in some of the countryside - especially Germany.

Hi mate............I was reading that Germany is going to start doing a yearly road tax for all vehicles including Germans themselves. In the Germans case though their drivers will get some sort of rebate. Last I heard Austria was challenging them in the courts. The argument being if Germany does it then all other EU member states should do the same. Cant remember the actual charge but it wasn't pennies.

Yes Spurs- I read that as well. The last I heard was that it was to be debated in a parliamentary motion but I understood the target was non German residents. If they do bring it in then it will collect a small fortune given the number of truck drivers on the roads.
Why would Austria protest? They have a vignette system in operation as you will know.
To be honest, I cannot understand why they don't introduce a toll system in the UK .It does not cost the moon to build the barrier toll booths and employ the staff required. Maybe the concern is to do with the traffic chaos that could arise if the trucks choose to avoid toll roads.

From what gathered it wasn't "tolls" as we know them, it was an outright tax, I didn't see the mention of toll booths.

Hi Spurs. Apparently the draft law was approved but is still to go through Parliament . The original draft has also
been watered down after discussions with the EU to appease concerns raised.
You are right re no toll booths- if passed it basically will be no different to a vignette system . If the 10 day pass is to be set at 2.5 euros as reported (albeit for the most environment friendly vehicles) then it will be fine by me - by far the cheapest toll on the journey.
My reference to the toll booths was misleading on my part - I meant this to read as a measure for the UK to adopt. They have such a non discriminatory system for the tunnels underneath the Mersey, for the bridges connecting Bristol and Wales and for the toll section on the M6. I actually think that the proposed German system is a sensible one - as long as it is set at the low limit as reported lol.
