Noisy Catholics

Why do left footers make so much of a bloody uproar on the Sabbath-DISCUSS

My quiet peaceful almost silent little village seems to burst into a raucous din on a Sunday morning

The infamous bells, the loud gatherings outside the chapel where everybody meets up-ffs they see them every day of the week why the need for another endless conversation now, the sacerdote standing out side the chapel having a word it seems with every single member of his flock-still think he's got his beady eye on me re non attendance-and finally the faithful near knock you over to get from chapel door to the 2 pubs adjacent-almost like after a good cup game where you all retire to the nearest hostelry to discuss the near goals and horrendous offside decisions

If and it's a big if I come out of Catholic retirement for a few matches/masses I really couldn't make it as a professional mass goer here

Re: Noisy Catholics

The attached article from our local newspaper may go some way to explain whats going on in your village.

THE Vatican confirmed what has long been suspected by a number of people: they are paying commission to priests for every person they convert to Catholicism.

These latest measures have been introduced to combat dwindling numbers attending church and an increase in numbers leaving the religion.

“We can’t deny that we’re in trouble, and that we need new followers. We’re not picky,” explained Cardinal Damien Lombardi, head of the Catholic Recruitment Network.

“We have incentivised this process, allowing our priests to make a little extra on the side,” added Lombardi.

The Vatican was forced to admit its policy as priests are increasingly found knocking door-to-door trying to convince non-Catholics to sign up to the faith.

“Our terms and conditions are actually a lot less complicated than the like seen on Facebook and iTunes, so the response has been positive enough, we just look for a commitment to throwing in a few euro into the church collection each week,” explained Lombardi.

Some priests here in Ireland are reportedly earning as much as €1,500 a week signing up new church members, but the system is not without it’s flaws as one investigating Garda explained.

“We’ve heard of one priest in Cork who excommunicates members of his congregation for the smallest of sins, say, like having sex before marriage, and then he has a Dublin priest friend who knocks around to their houses with a ‘special introductory offer’ and they split the commission,” explained Garda Tom Walsh.

There have also been several scuffles between priests and rival door-to-door deity pushers the Jehovah’s Witnesses as they fight over sales territories

Re: Noisy Catholics

We have a load of happy , clappy , hand slappy lurkers here in sunny Sorrey. Our nearest is non denominational but they still clog up Waitrose car park for hours on end after their hegemonic deity bothering deliberations.

Catholics are tame compared to this lot.

All beatific smiles , gushing about the rug rats and their horrid Sunday best.

That feels better.

Re: Noisy Catholics

I know what you mean Steve

I can however see some similarities betwixt Irish/Spanish mass goers in that the pub is very much part of the ritual-don't think the happy slappers would take a beer

From I was a late teenager we were always careful to go to a different time mass than our parents. We would go to the 12 noon one-which coincided with the AOH club next door opening.

So we would walk into the chapel foyer, lift a mass sheet and then about turn for a few pints in the club returning home for family Sunday dinner with documented proof we had completed our Catholic duty

All of you - you are disgraceful with your nasty comments ... have some respect for others please. OK I am Roman Catholic and do still go to church on Sundays - even in Turkey I travel an hour from Side to the church in Antalya on a Sunday. I like the uplift of the service and the guitars and singing as much as my time for religious thoughts. Many of my friends are Muslims, Church of England and even atheists... to each his own ... but kindness and respect all around please.

Re: Noisy Catholics

Angela I too am nominally a Catholic and can see no harm in the banter I posted about my own religion

As someone who had relatives disembowelled tortured and murdered solely for being Catholic I am neither going to be deliberately vulgar re the faith that meant so much to them nor shy from light hearted banter which most Catholics would not find in any way offensive

God knows how our Muslim members put up with the endless vile filth posted onTlf re their faith

Loosen up

Loosen up indeed Angela. I am also Catholic and find this banter quite funny. The connotation between Sunday mass and the pub is also so true. Our Sunday mass was at 11.00am. it was the only time we wouldn't be complaining about the long ramblings of the Priest as the pubs didn't open 'till 12 .00 and you didn't want to be seen queuing outside. A casual walk along followed by an almighty sidestep as one would almost be passing the pub was more appropriate.

If the authorities ever got the idea of making Sunday a closed day, the Churches would be empty.

Where would we be without the humour of the Irish.

I rather think that this is most definitely an ecumenical matter.
