If I ever moved back to Turkey thats exactly where I would head for, Izmir.

Unlike the 60/70/80s where it was simply head for the cheapness & the sun, politics/governments now have to be considered, seems to becoming a major factor this day & age and IMO that applies to anywhere.

Indeed Potugal is a nice country - after 4 years in TR we left for this small country on the edge of western europe.

Re: Ideal place to live?

IA some good recommendations but unless you have a view of the bosphorus why would you put up with the chaos and cost of Istanbul...Agree with your Izmir suggestions but the flight frequency/destinations would be a concern.

Re: Ideal place to live?

Been thinking of having a look at Portugal for a while, we last went nearly 30 years ago, my lasting memories were getting covered in donkey **** on a day trip, both of us and it was at the beginning of the trip and stunk, far too much consumption of grilled sardines which I find disgusting, too much concrete, the sea is freezing, and a Dutch guy tried his hand with me ffs !!
That said 30 years down the line, I wouldn't go on a trip that involved donkeys unless of course it was masonic, they must have got over sardines by now, I don't use the sea any more and the Dutch guy might have turned his toes up by now after 30 years or so, he was getting on a bit to be fair.
But I do like the look of the place with what I've seen on TV

Re: Ideal place to live?

I found the variety of food limited in Portugal, that was about 10 yeas ago, it was mainly sardines and boiled potatoes and salad, very healthy but can get boring very quickly.

So I was ther 30 years ago, and you 10 and they still eat too many sardines, not for me then, what about Madeira, never saw a sardine there, very cosmopolitan actually quite modern. Bit hilly though.
