Re: Buying in Spain

Yes, the Housemartins have just gone to Spain, so yes, we may all end up there. I wonder where our destination after Spain will be ? Portugal would be an easy move:

Know people who drive there for mini breaks and some use the Huelva border area for tax reasons

Yes my friend lives there, plus I had a place in Torrevieja some years ago, so know a few bits and bobs already, I know it's going to be a heck of a lot more expensive than here thats for sure.

Re: Buying in Spain

It is in some things , DEFINITELY electric, but as you know eating out ( quality meals) booze etc is actually cheaper

Obviously the Euro rate is the big variable but overall I do find it more expensive- but not prohibitively so

I note new cars ( same story as Turkey 2nd hand ridiculous prices) from many European manufacturers are now cheaper than UK

Bottom line he's it's more expensive but in some aspects it's more developed etc

Re: Buying in Spain

When you say booze is cheaper I am sure it is a lot cheaper than Turkey but definitely not cheaper than here in North Cyprus. Local spirits are 10 to 12 tl a bottle but even 'proper' brands are a lot less than 10 quid a bottle. Efes at the moment is 9.90tl for four of the big bottles on offer and there always are offers. Much cheaper than duty free even.

Re: Buying in Spain

I asked my friend to send me a breakdown on all her bills to give us an idea of what to expect. I know when we lived in Turkey we used to live on 300 TL a week, then it was a big shock when we came here and there was no way we could live on that, we doubled the budget, but, Turkey was very cheap, our average food bill here is about 250 TL , sounds alot to us, but convert it back to sterling it doesn't seem so bad. After my friends breakdown of bills they seemed pretty similar, apart from the electric, and of course, the tax bill to take into account. Any thoughts on health care, or insurance, I don't think you can just go along to the state hospital there and pay like you can here can you ?

Re: Buying in Spain

If like us you haven't your state pension you must pay

You can either take private or after a year of private you can opt into the state scheme

There are pluses and minuses with both options

Of course until you get settled you can use your S1 - some rogues use it for years but if you are settling full time you are meant to desist after 3 months

You are probably correct

For me as a lager drinker it's having an infinitely better choice and for wine drnkers with good quality bottles starting at €2- or even cheaper if you collect it from tne winery

Of course the real bonus is away from tourist areas menu dia includes free booze with a good quality 3 course meal starting at €7

As has been said however the overall cost of living is definitely higher than Turkey, I would however suggest so is the standard
