Re: Living abroad

What did my head in about Belfast was whilst the councils across the North were strict about householders separating their rubbish when the bin lorries brought the waste to the council tips-75% of them dumped it all in a single area totally mixed after the householders separating the stuff!!!

This was because the EU would fine the councils if they did not have a householder waste separation procedure BUT most of the councils had been unable to afford the facility to dispose of it separately

Meanwhile here in Valencia when it comes to waste collection the council appears to have a fetish for stickers

Whilst certain co!oured bins containing certain types of waste must only be set out on certain days and to make matters more comp!icated the schedule they give out actually refers to the day you put the box out- not the day its collected(5 am in the morning)-if you add certain stickers to the lid of certain boxes it radically changes the expected contents which may be contained therein!!!

Re: Living abroad

I am morphing into an immigrant ( hate the term ex pat)

Yesterday in a bar the barman remarked to me he would be glad come November that there would be less tourists about. ( whilst we are talking dozens as opposed to hundreds we particularly get weekenders from Madrid)

I nodded in stern agreement with him before realising I am only living here 4 weeks!!!!

Re: Living abroad

I have noticed that you can tell the out of towners a mile off when driving. They do stupid things like stop dead on a busy dual carriageway

Re: Living abroad

Currently I hate when visitors to the town maybe call to the bar I am in with friends and in conversation ask how long we’ve lived here

14 years, 8 years.......4 weeks- sounds bad!!!

Re: Living abroad

Home for me is anywhere as long as the sun is shining .... though after 8 years away from the UK I can't imagine ever going back there even though everyone keeps telling me they have had a fantastic summer, and that is how the future summers are going to be.... Sorry, I'm not convinced. Oh, and I would have to go back to work so couldn't enjoy impromptu days out when the sun shone, I did suggest to my employer ( the council) every sunny day should be a National holiday, but, for some reason no one took me seriously . xx

Re: Living abroad

Having been expat for almost 60 years I've moved around a good few countries and my settling period is usually just a few weeks.

But no matter how long I lived in W Africa or the MidEast I never adjusted & was always pleased to move on again.

Obviously it helps if you have a fair grasp of the local language (my pidgin Russian is slowly improving & a great ice breaker )

Re: Living abroad

We haven't moved yet but my villa feels like my home when I am there. Now moving is imminent my UK home feels transient.

I built my UK home with my own two hands and I am not a builder by trade. Despite this my only reservations on selling up and moving are for the kids who have only ever known it as home.

Having been out in the villa for the equivalent of a year in the last 10 years. we know our way around, which makes it more homely. But I am dreading the serious red tape when we finally move.

Ill miss some things about the UK like Amazon shopping and Screwfix but I cant think of much else.
