A journey to Kars

My wife Linda and I were on holiday in Icmiler when Linda found a book on a shelf in a bar titled Snow by Orhan Pamuk, which turned out to be a book about a town in Eastern Turkey which has more than its fair share of snow for 5 or 6 months of the year. It got us thinking about going there for an adventure, we then found out that a famous train goes there, well that was it!! we and a few friends got it booked and we were off. First leg was fly to Ankara where we stayed over night in a hotel by the train station, a bonus was also being a 15 minute walk from the Ataturk mausoleum!! this is a fantastic place and a must see. The mausoleum is not just the resting place of the Aturturk but also a huge indoor museum, give yourselves 2 or 3 hours to look around. Next step off to the train station, and what a train station!! this place would put most indoor shopping centers to shame, it was immaculate with lots of shops open or being opened there was even a Migros there to get stocked up for the trip.

Re: A journey to Kars

We were in Kars in 1987, even then we were amazed that in the hotel the windows were triple glazed. it get really cold in winter (as Orhan writes in the book), some days down to minus 36C. The eastern express train is often fully booked in advance. That is one that is on out list.

Re: A journey to Kars

The train arrived smack on time and we were off, the train was a sleeper so we had our own cabin with bunk beds, sink, table and fridge. One word of advise -for anybody thinking of doing the trip (take your own food) the hot food in the dining car was awful!!. It was micro waved meals of a very poor quality. To be fair I think the problem was all the Turkish on the train were making their own meals so we were the only people eating so getting fresh produce and a chef on for a few yabanci was probably not cost effective. Next post will be the journey.

Re: A journey to Kars

We used to do the Pamukkale express from Denizli to Istanbul. It was also a sleeper. I used to put a few beers in the fridge too for the overnight journey. Fabulous really.

Re: A journey to Kars

I do hope this thread runs for quite some time, it would be interesting to see the snow and how people from Altinkum react to seeing it. Myself, I haven't seen any in the flesh so to speak for more than fifteen years.
My wife is Turkish and lived in Sivas, Ankara and Istanbul before setting off for England to find me.
We married in Istanbul almost thirty years ago and lived in England for fifteen years before moving to Turkey permienantly. Her greatest desire has been to see Turkey..... maybe one day.

Re: A journey to Kars

Weíve done several tours of parts of Turkey including Cappadocia, Lake Van, Mardin, the Black Sea, Mount Nemrut and Ankara. We visited the Ataturk Mausoleum and found it very interesting.
We have another trip to look forward to in May, which includes Istanbul and Gallipoli.
Enjoy the rest of your adventure.
