Barred from work after travel to Japan due to Coronavirus

Just had to help my daughter out. She has returned from a holiday in Japan today, only to be told not to go into work for 14 days. She works as a carer for just one client. This has left her financially struggling to pay her bills this month. Not only has she lost 2 weeks salary, but she had also swapped some shifts to allow her to stay away a bit longer. She won't now be able to cover these shifts, leaving her even more out of pocket.

She had saved for 3 years to go on this holiday. She left on 16th January before all the scare stories had started.

I don't know about employment law but, if her employer bans her from working, surely it is up to them to pay her ? I'd enquire at the Citizens Advise place if I were her. Another point, if she is considered "ill" and not allowed to work, surely she is entitled to sick pay ? Defo' find out for her. Carers get abysmal pay to start with !

Guidance for healthcare providers: healthcare workers who have travelled to China and other specified areas/countries
Updated 10 February 2020

https://www.gov.uk/government/public...elled-to-china

IMO its catch 22 I have had carers lookin after relatives in the past if I was advised that a carer recently returned from Asia and I was asked do I want that carer or another carer that hasn't been to Asia I would play safe and choose another carer, Sorry I have to think what is best for my relatives 1st.

I know the OP mentioned that their daughter only works with 1 client but the issue is she would be in contact with other carers/healthcare workers shift changes, home visits etc

Re: Barred from work after travel to Japan due to Coronavirus

I suppose because of this almost world wide threat of coronavirus we just have to pull together and help each other out where we can. I recently had the most vile flu and didn't think I'd recover. After 5 days of being bedridden my friend got some supplies in for me and I insisted she leave it on the doorstep (she's a carer) . It seemed right to keep out of everyone's way so not to spread it.

Re: Barred from work after travel to Japan due to Coronavirus

I expect she's an agency worker considered to be 'self employed' in which case her rights are very limited. If I'm correct it's a great example of why companies employ on these terms.

Re: Barred from work after travel to Japan due to Coronavirus

I listened to a Chinese businessman today speaking from China. He said he can afford to pay his workers for a month or two at the most, then the factory will be shutdown. That must be the case right across China.
Can this virus only be transferred via human to human, what about food stuff etc?

Re: Barred from work after travel to Japan due to Coronavirus

As mentioned before, my son and his wife are professional carers. They work for an agency within the NHS. If they have a shift pulled for any reason, they do not get paid. But in fairness, if the shift is pulled within the same day, they still get paid. They do not get holiday or sick pay.

My son has recently been diagnosed with a double hernia. He was told that he could have normal surgery, or keyhole. Recovery time is shorter for keyhole, although the operation itself is more dangerous (nicking, cutting something by mistake etc.). He has opted for keyhole in order to lose the least money. I have to say though that this condition has nothing to do with his job. More to do with hefting about huge speakers and disco equipment. He started being a disc jockey when he was 17 year old. Today is his birthday, he is 56. He does still do the odd gig, but less now then a few years ago. The hernias (he thought he had only one) are a legacy of being a disc jockey.

Check if travel insurance might pay.
