Smile By car from uk to Bodrum

Hi, Has anyone travelled over to Turkey in last couple of years. My sister and I plus small dog want to travel by car.
The ferry route seems expensive if we had a cabin so does anyone know a good route that has few tolls by land.
Also do we need international driving licences, what car paperwork do we need and has anyone taken a dog as we are worried about getting a B and B with a dog.
Really appreciate some suggestions.

Many thanks

Colette

Re: By car from uk to Bodrum

Hi Collette, yes we have done it both ways. Firstly via France, Italy, across the ferry to Igunomista (crap spelling I know) and staight across Greece to Turkey. It is a loverly trip, but the ferry can be rather expensive, especially if you drive the shortest route and take the ferry from Venice.

We have also been the road way - straight across Italy to Croatia and then down via Bulgaria. Loved the driving route and there are plenty of places to camp if that is your thing and you are worried about B&B's with the dog.

Generally, we found that most countries were very accepting of the dog, until you get to Bulgaria and then Turkey - where culturally most dogs are not really pets for are there to look after the house of the livestock - so it can feel alien to some in those areas to have a dog in the B&B.

Currently you do not need an IDL, but you will in the next few months so I would get one - They are a little over £5 and you apply online

Don't forget that you will be required to have a titter test for the dog within 24hours of leaving the UK and if you intend to bring her/him back then you have to have a vet check within before 24 hours of entering UK - You vet should be familiar with the requirements.

Please feel free to send me a PM if you think I can offer any more info.

Re: By car from uk to Bodrum

Surely the titler test lasts longer than 24hrs

I thought you got the test done and the result lasted a couple of months???

Re: By car from uk to Bodrum

Yes, of course the test lasts longer - 12 months in fact. But the UK Authorities insist that the vet has to do a final check on it within 24 before you leave - something to do with an EU agreement that animals should be checked just before transport, so as to limit potential infections

I believe that you can only drive a car into Bodrum with plates beginning with 34 and 06

Yes, they give you a DEFRA certificate (cost us about £150 all told) and nobody in any country asked to see it - including Turkey!

Re: By car from uk to Bodrum

But does Turkey state they require it as part of entry conditions?

I know they require the rabies and Titler stuff but this final check one, is it asked for in Turkeys requirements?

Re: By car from uk to Bodrum

I think you need to work out which countries you will be allowed to enter

At the moment Turkish and British nationals are not allowed to enter Greece

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...s-June-15.html

There are no direct ferries between Italy and Turkey

The Bulgarian Government has announced severe restrictions on international travel, forbidding entry to British nationals, except for those with permanent or long term residence in Bulgaria. These restrictions remain in place in spite of the recent relaxation of some domestic measures.

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-ad...y-requirements

And while the Covid19 travel advice is in place
COVID-19 Exceptional Travel Advisory Notice
As countries respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, including travel and border restrictions, the FCO advises British nationals against all but essential international travel. Any country or area may restrict travel without notice. If you live in the UK and are currently travelling abroad, you are strongly advised to return now, where and while there are still commercial routes available. Many airlines are suspending flights and many airports are closing, preventing flights from leaving.

You will not get travel insurance you need to check with your car insurance company would they provide cover at the moment

Phillip - its is the same thing. The DEFRA cert system requires the final check etc. It is technically required in all EU countries and in Turkey - but in our experience we were never asked for it. Sods law says that if you didn't have it they probably would have asked.
