swimming to rabbit island

Hello,

I noticed a structure of some kind on the bigger of these two islands last time I was there and this time I want to go have a real look. Has anyone swum over to it before?

Re: swimming to rabbit island

I was told the channel going over there has particularly strong currents, so not for me plus its 700 metres at its narrowest point, you can get a boat trip out of the harbour that will take you there, its an old greek church apparrently

Re: swimming to rabbit island

I'd rather swim 700M sounds doable. How would one go about finding the strength of the current on any particular day?

No idea to be honest, you could ask the harbour master

Re: swimming to rabbit island

Would the strength of the current , direction of current and prevailing wind mean anything to a swimmer ?

What in your opinion is acceptable ?

Steve.

Re: swimming to rabbit island

I would think so, they all play a role, maybe some mathematics involving trigonometry and vectors is in order.

Re: swimming to rabbit island

Be careful............about 3 weeks ago a very experienced local guy age 25 drowned whiist diving with his brother out there. His body was recovered next day and basically it was not viewable by his own mother as it had been crushed.
The currents out there are extremely strong and even on a good day its difficult for the boats to re enter Gündöğan bay.
I would not recommend swimming there.
Hire a boat for the day.
The building is an old Greek church that was used by monks.
Its a difficult climb, lots of thorns and brambles. Wear long sleeves and trousers and try and follow the red arrows that have been painted on some rocks. The last time I went, out of 3 lots of people that walked up only 2 lots got to the church...one lot got lost and had to return.
It wasnt an easy walk they all said.....I stayed on the boat !
