Total hip replacement

Have any of you - or your partners - had one of these?

Re: Total hip replacement

My friend had one. She was in pain regularly before, started working from home then eventually gave up work altogether. The op itself was very painful and she was very much worse before she got better, it was a slow recovery as she also has lupus which affected her joints. But we go walking once a week and she has no discomfort or pain. Will ask then pass you her email...maybe she could tell you more.

Re: Total hip replacement

My sister has had both hips replaced within an 18 month period. She's gone from significant pain and disability to pain free and good mobility. Best thing she ever had done.

Thanks for the swift responses.

What sort of age were they when they had them done?

Re: Total hip replacement

My sister was 54 for the first hip and then 55 and a half for the second. She's currently on holiday in India, enjoying life again. She's now 58.

Re: Total hip replacement

My friend had hers done too at 42yrs old. She would say she wish she had it done earlier, she waited til she was in agony & the recovery took longer. She was on a cocktail of painkillers & painfree now.

Re: Total hip replacement

Have just called her. She was 42 when she had it 2 years ago. It was done on the NHS at The Queens Medical Centre Nottingham. Took her 8 months to turn a corner and she's just said exactly what Bev's written "it's the best thing i've ever done". Now totally pain free.

Re: Total hip replacement

Thanks. My surgeon is trying to convince me that as I'm in my 40s I'm too young, as it will mean that I will probably have to have it done again at a later point, which he thinks is to be avoided. But I'm just not sure that I want to wait.

Re: Total hip replacement

I think that you know your body, your pain levels etc more than anyone. I would get a second opinion then see how you feel.

Re: Total hip replacement

I'm staggered by how common it must actually be going by this thread.

The difficulty I have is in having to make a surgical decision, without really feeling qualified to do so.
