Slipped disc!

I'm having a bad month!
Doing the same exercise I've done thousands of times in the gym I felt a sharp pain in the lower back left side and over the past few days the pain got worse and the left leg has become weak and I am limping along.
I assumed I'd slipped a disc so I went to the A & E of one of the local hospitals and the casualty doctor did some tests and confirmed that I had. He asked me to make an appointment with the neurosurgeon and for an MRI scan asap.
My question: has anyone amongst you had a slipped disc and do they ALWAYS require surgery? It's the last thing I want obviously but whatever has to be done must be done.

Re: Slipped disc!

Try lying on a hard floor on your back, also sleep if you can on the floor for a few days, it would help, as my husband is always slipping his disc, and this does help.

Stephanie

I have slipped discs (that slip at the stangest movement, ie like taking my pants off to get ready for bed!)and scoliosis in the lower part of my back and no, they dont always need surgery...some may of course, but I have had to be really mindful of exercise and it has taken a real back seat for me and the consequence has been a loss of physical shape and fitness I enjoyed before injuring my back....however, no surgery.

Re: Slipped disc!

Thanks people, especially Ispingo - your poor husband
I rang a nice Turkish friend who begged me to have a second opinion from a neurosurgeon she knows and says it is a big op and has risks and is NOT to be rushed into unless you have lost all the feeling in your legs and are incontinent, for example.
Ispingo you are right - it's the sleeping that is the misery for me. I wake up in the night in total agony with my leg feeling as if it's in cramp +++ and can't even bend down to attend to my dog in the morning.
Throughout the day mobility gets a bit better and I will get an MRI scan done, two opinions, if need be, and only go for surgery as a very last resort. However, they say that the leg problems take a while to heal, if you go down the non surgical route, but they do heal.
Ispingo, I take it your husband never considered surgery then?
Bev, thanks for your useful input. I do sport and will have to take a break obviously from that but they do say that with these injuries one still has to be mobile and do exercise. I also have scoliosis in the upper back, upper dorsal.

Re: Slipped disc!

Hi Steph

I remain active, but there are particular movements and exercises I just cannot do anymore....plus I have a very active working life on top of that...take care, listen to your body and let it heal, the activity will return but maybe in a different form.

Re: Slipped disc!

Bev, slipped discs are all too common, unfortunately Especially with strength sports where we can't get away from lifting weights! I'm not going to rush to have a scan. I will see how I do for a week on painkillers and light exercises and take it from there. Thank you all so much for your input

Re: Slipped disc!

Trackshan ( spelling) could be your answer instead of surgery if you do have to stay in hospital, or if you have to get someone to take a door off and put it under your mattress , this is another thing that is good

Take care kale yvonne

Re: Slipped disc!

I commiserate with you....I have suffered for many years with disc problems, three in lower back.
I was advised to rest up for a few days then start gentle excersise, take Ibrufen and strong painkillers.
When the acute stage was over I would go for a short walk and slowly build this up, it takes a long time and i really dont think I can say it has ever really gone away completly.
I am very aware of how I move, just twisting to get out of shower would be enough to start it off.
The physio gave me an excersise plan which you can google, and I found this helped a lot, and I had ultrasound treatment to get rid of inflamation.
Over a number of years I had pain relief injections which were fantastic but dont work for everyone, these are done in theatre under xray conditions these actually enabled me to stay at my job.

I think an op is the last resort, if become incontinent or loose feeling contact Gp asap.

I hope you get sorted soon, there are some great books you can read as they help you to understand the condition and not be to frightened by it.
