Re: Ulcer on my ankle.

Hospital ASAP, also quite gross this one but it does work (seriously) - maggots! They eat the infected areas, it has to be done under a doctors supervision (so they don't start on the good stuff) but will clear the infection in double quick time, I have an aunt who will not use this treatment, but has suffered from an ulcer on her leg for years. I know which one I would choose even though the thought of is is quite repugnant.

Good luck.

Re: Ulcer on my ankle.

I have been told about Maggots before Jamie by my pal Ellen. I will go to the Clinic in Yambol and take it from there. I hope they know what they are doing, like I said before the Doc didn't seem too worried so I hope the clinic will take more notice. I can't get there until Monday but I will buy a compression sock tomorrow and put that on for now.
Thanks again for your reply's, much appreciated.

Re: Ulcer on my ankle.

Sharon. as others have advised please get it checked out.
My friend is a type 1 diabetic and has to have her feet seen to regularly, one of the side effects, she got an ulcerated toe in June and has had to have most of toes and the underside of her foot amputated, very extreme case, after he op she had to have a bag of maggots on it for 4 days!, and she is still having treatment with a vacum drain in to helpt it heal.

Please treat this as urgent priority on yourself.

Re: Ulcer on my ankle.

Sharon, my father suffered from a terrible ulcer on his leg. The doctor tried lots of different things but nothing helped. Finally one of his carers brought some horse chestnut drops - from the herbal shop. Apparently they tasted awful - but after some time they did the trick and the ulcer started to heal. My aunt subsequently tried the horse chestnut remedy and it worked for her too. Good luck and hope you get it seen to before it gets worse.

Re: Ulcer on my ankle.

I would not advise you to use compression stockings unless you have been medically prescribed them,,as a qualified nurse i would advise you to seek medical help,,as others have stated ulcers are notoriously hard to heal and can reoccur,,without seeing it,,it is impossible to advise you of the correct treatment,,,but first look to see if it is clean or sluffy,,if it has greeny gunge that needs to be cleared up before it will start to heal,, you might need to pack the hole with thin gauze and a cleaning agent,,wounds heal from the inside outwards,,if it clean there are dressings available to promote healing,,in UK we use specialist tissue viability nurses to assess and prescribe treatment for ulcers but i dont know if they have these in turkey,,,please seek medical advice asap as this will only go worse without treatment,,,,

Re: Ulcer on my ankle.

Until you see your Doc , wash it gently with a shower spray ( disinfect the shower head first ) shower heads can be full of bacteria. Do not touch it or dry it , allow it to air dry. You must obtain from the chemist a non adhering dressing. Apply the dressing without any ointment. Fix a pad over the gauze and apply a bandage or sticking plaster to keep it in place. Change when blood or exudate strikes through.

The dressing is just to keep it clean , cats and other animals must not come into cantact with the wound or your hands , so use surgical gloves.

Please see your Doc asap , it is vey important.

After 5 months of treatment to both legs with a variety of dressings and medications a lovely District Nurse started me on tubes of a manuka honey product , it was applied daily with compression dressing. Manuka honey for medical application is not the same as the stuff sold in food shops.

After three weeks of this i was in compression socks on my way to Turkey...

Never looked back.

Steve.

Re: Ulcer on my ankle.

I carnt state strongly enough that compression dressings must only be used under medical advice/supervision (esp in the case of ulcers),,,,it is normal/usual to test the pulses/blood flow in your legs useing a dopla machine prior to prescribing these,,,,,,,,,,,,
