Re: The Odd Tipples All Add Up

It rings a few bells for me. If I had the money now that I spent on booze I would be sitting pretty. However it never did me any harm and cost the state nothing, so I'm happy to let bygone's be bygone's.

Re: The Odd Tipples All Add Up

I reckon a lot of us have been down that road, but have had a wake-up call and taken a different path.

Could probably float a boat or ten on what I've supped in the past.

Changed days.

Re: The Odd Tipples All Add Up

As a teenager I went to Italy with a friend who's mother was Italian. We stayed with his grandparents, who were in thier70's . The grandfather drank a litre of his own made red wine with his lunch, went to his " Orta" which is a parcel of land they grow grape vines, olive trees, vegetables etc, to work. At night he would drink his customary litre of red wine with dinner, and also polish off any of the remaining wine from the rest of the table. He was not alone in this practise we visited several of his friends and relatives who all drank wine in the same quantities. Peitro said that every summer when he had visited his relatives it was the norm to have large quantities of wine at the table, the very young had a mixture of wine and water, or lemonade.
By all accounts this is the same practise throughout rural France, but we never see the Italian or French governments demonising drink or the perils of alcohol, it is considered normal.
As I have almost reached my three score years and ten I think that I will continue as I am doing, I rarely drink to excess nowadays, and have two or three days a week without alcohol.
As far as I am concerned they are preaching to the deaf with me.

Re: The Odd Tipples All Add Up

What really P's me off is reports like this condemning a generation out of hand.
I don't recall any public health reports telling me not to work too hard, when I was younger, informing me that all the toil and stress on my joints and bones would take there toll in later life. After a lifetime in the building trade working in all weathers, spending hours on my knees putting down flooring, plugging walls for skirting boards, lifting heavy joists, roof trusses, staircases etc. no doctor said " don't do that son, you will suffer from arthritis in later life, and have to be a burden on the N.H.S. taking painkillers everyday" . No,they said " keep up the good work son, and pay you national insurance we will look after you when you get old"
Like everyone else I listened to their spiel and got conned, they don't want to pay a decent living pension ( fortunately I also paid into a works pension and a private pension, after seeing my parents struggle on pension) and God forbid I probably will live too long for their liking.
They then have the audacity to tell me that my generation are a burden on society. All I can say to them in response is " COBBLERS"
