Dead Within 13 Years.

Sometimes I read some article and wonder if it is a joke. This one clearly is not.

From New Scientist, headline: "A bad sense of smell predicts early death but we don’t know why"

They are perplexed. If someone of 82 loses their sense of smell, they will probably die within the next 13 years: they don't know why; I think I could solve that one for them without much thought, and I am not a doctor.

"A poor sense of smell in older adults is linked to a nearly 50 per cent increase in the likelihood of dying in the next 10 years, but the reasons for this aren’t fully clear."

Re: Dead Within 13 Years.

I have had a poor sense of smell all my life - 76 years. Do I expect to die within the next 10 years? I had planned on living for another 20.

Is it 'cos they suffer dementia , leave the gas on and die because they cannot smell it ?

Re: Dead Within 13 Years.

I wondered if with the dementia cases, its a case of not remembering the name of what they are smelling, not that they can't smell it. Just a thought. xx

Re: Dead Within 13 Years.

I could not understand if the study looked at all age groups or not. Surely older people tend to lose their sense of smell and are more likely to die within any specified time. I also could not tell if it implied that people who lose their sense of smell are more susceptible as opposed to people who never had a well developed sense of smell.

I think it comes down to - if you wake up, and can not smell the coffee, you have 13 years at best; or, you might just die of old age with full smelling capabilities; or, you might suddenly smell diesel, as you get hit by a bus.

Re: Dead Within 13 Years.

I have read somewhere that loss of sense of smell is an early sign of dementia and possibly Parkinsons.
