rads or underfloor
Hi All
We have to decide on the type of heating that we are to have installed in villa very soon.
We are looking at Radiators and also Underfloor.
Were really undecided as to which way we go even after reading all the info on here. Also underfloor heating is quite new to Turkey i believe, so if any of you have first hand experience of both, please share it with me.

Re: rads or underfloor
Our property has the infrastructure for central heating but we have had all the pipes capped off.The cost of installing a boiler doesn't justify the expense. We have an open fire for the cooler months in Turkey.
Under floor heating needs to be thought about at the planning stage as a lot of insulation needs to be put under the pipes.

Re: rads or underfloor
Whatever form of heating you have look into the cost of gas or electricity first.
We had radiators installed powered by propane gas. Was 95ytl for a cylinder which would heat all our water and 7 radiators for about 7 days depending on how much you used it. The gas has now gone up to 167ytl. So for the past 3 years we have used a wood burning stove and Eco heaters for our bedroom and the bathroom. Not cheap if you have them on 24/7 but used wisely not too bad.
I believe that you can get central heating powered by solar which to my mind must be the answer in the long run but not sure about the costings.

Re: rads or underfloor
We have gas fired under floor heating (water pipes) in our house using a normal "Kombi" or "Kat Kalorifer" type central heating boiler. It provides an excellent background heat and makes the house feel very cosy, especially for bare feet, but does need supplementing quite a bit with an electric fire or the ac from time to time, mainly early mornings and late evenings. It’s on a zoned system using valves, so for example we could turn it off in one room and keep it on in another. But we just keep everything on. Very pleased with it overall.
Not too sure about costs, as we have a big tank in the garden that we fill once a year (gas also used for cooking). This year in June or July we topped up the tank with 1,700 TL (about £600+) worth of gas. That covered 12 months use from the previous fill in July 2007.
One minor drawback is that our floor is small interlocking parquet units and these have shrunk quite a bit due to the heat, leaving gaps up to 1/8th inch between some of the pieces. But that’ll get fixed when we get down to re-sanding and sealing …… sometime ……
Decisions, decisions ……

Re: rads or underfloor
We're in the same boat as rosewall1. We've got full gas central heating installed, but can't afford to run it. Even on it's lowest setting we were using a full gas cylinder every 4 days. That's almost £20 per day at today's prices.

Re: rads or underfloor
We've looked into solar heating and shopped around but it just works out too expensive to install, we have a 4 bedroom house and to have 10 radiators running from this it would cost us nearly 18000 ytl to install. We've already got all the pipework installed, the cost above did include the radiators but they are not expensive, 3 solar panels, (different from normal hot water ones as if we want to use the central heating in the morning i.e before 5am and during the night we can't use normal ones) and installation. We have been quoted more or less the same price by 3 different firms as we thought this price was laughable and that we were being well ripped off! Our only other option was electric but our power supply is not always good living out in the country, so we're still looking for an alternative.
Good luck in your search, if you find heating at a reasonable price, maybe you could let us know on here what you decide on?
Regards
Sara

Re: rads or underfloor
Thanks all
Think we may just stick with the normal rads with boiler, possibly an oil fired one, and look at getting a good quality wood or coal burner installed.
Can central heating be run from a wood or coal burner? anyone know anything about this way of heating?
grrrrrrrrrr why does it have to get cold?

Re: rads or underfloor
Central heating is great but not a viable option really unless you are loaded . We have always coped with a halogen heater and air-con with socks and extra layers on. We also have a few rugs we put down in winter so it feels warmer underfoot

Re: rads or underfloor
A couple of posters on another forum mentioned that they've got a Danish made boiler system in their houses. It's installed in the fire place and has a back boiler which supplies all of their heating and hot water needs. Mind you it was installed during construction of the building so I don't know what the situation would be with a retro-fit.
