Re: Log Burner - Flue

Our old house 1890s had 2 brick built chimneys, one was condemned by the HETAS engineer, no problem as we used it as a decorative feature, the other was origanal and passed, there was no requirement for a liner used our Morso Squirrel in that one.

HETAS is not a qualification, it is a registration scheme like the NICEIC no more.

In England and Wales you would most likely need building regulations to install a log or multi fuel stove, whereas up here in Scotland there is no requirement nor is there a requirement to have a HETAS or any of the other schemes registered installer do the work.

https://www.stovefitterswarehouse.co...s/regulations2

https://www.hetas.co.uk/consumer/faqs/

I personally would always have any work done by a member of one of the schemes.

We were advised to use this or a similar product to neutralise the crap up the chimney, it does work.

Re: Log Burner - Flue

We used a firm in Fethiye and the wood burner we had fitted was an English import, I did not fancy a Chinese one!
The fitters were excellent, put up polythene sheets across the lunge in order to contain the dust. Proper flue liner installed as well as the cowl on top of the chimney.
Get yourself a decent carbon monoxide alarm, also ensure that you have sufficient ventilation in your house, every year families in Turkey die from carbon monoxide poisoning huddled round Sorbas with Windows sealed.
Have a look at the building regs for the UK. if my memory serves me right over 5 kW requires ventilation, mine is 7kw. The fitters did not seem to understand my concerns. I fitted ventilation myself.

Our Turkish holiday property is insured with Intasure and this is a condition for insurance, (not the HETAs installers; that's for UK homes). You must have a properly lined chimney.
The policy says that no claim for fire damage will be accepted unless the chimney has been lined with a proper flue.
Intasure is a UK broker which lays off property insurance to a Turkish insurer, I think it's Olympus (?) insurance. When you phone them they disclose it in their preamble while waiting for a connection.
Hope that helps.
PS You should always get the chimney swept annually and keep a receipt to show insurers for any fire claim.

Re: Log Burner - Flue

Go to the local fire station to get a recommendation for a chimney sweep. Most fire staions run courses to train chimney sweeps. One of the firemen did ours on his day off!

Re: Log Burner - Flue

We added a fireplace after our villa was built & TBF at the time of the build I never even thought about one.
Specialists from Izmir came to do it but I did the seal from the unit to the flue liner myself.
They had to break through the ceiling in the lounge & the ceiling onto that landing, then out to the roof terrace where they built the chimney.
The flue liner was boxed in on the landing where I had a low level metal open/shut vent fitted. Opening that vent heated upstairs.
That's why I did the seal myself, fumes can kill.

Re fumes:
the HETAS installers who put our new stove in last month had to include a CO (carbon monoxide) alarm with a 7yr battery with the package. It's fitted behind a beam on the ceiling and hardly visible.

Re: Log Burner - Flue

Hi all,

Does anyone know if Alarko in Fethiye also sweeps chimneys? I am in Seydikemer (20 mins from Fethite) and looking to get the chimney/flue for my log burner sweep. It's a condition of my insurance policy that it gets done annually.

Re: Log Burner - Flue

I don't think so, but there are a few "Sweeps" in Fethiye (Google - Fethiye Baca Temizleme) if you want to do it yourself. Or, phone MrT property maintenance - he arranged mine.

Re: Log Burner - Flue

If you call into the local fire station they will recommend a sweep (in out case one of the fireman came to do it on his day off). He made some good safety recommendations too. We paid 250 TL last Spring, two chimneys, and it was a 100km round trip for him.
