Fetih-1453

I will not be rushing to see this film.

I want to tell how disappointed I am by the belligerent gloating numerous Turks are displaying now that this film has been released.

I remember the outcry in Turkey when the film Troy was released. Many were up in arms about the portrayal of the Trojans and the capture of the city, and yet here we have another glorification of war and destruction.

I admittedly know very little about the invasion of Constantinople but I do know that innocent lives were lost, women and children were reportedly raped by invading forces and ultimately the city lost a huge percentage of it's occupants. I cannot fathom a reason to celebrate this fact, or portray such a period in time with honour. What will be next? A pride-filled rendition of the Nazi invasions?

There have been several critical columns written about the film (along with hundreds of positive reviews) specifically regarding the self-congratulatory ambience that the film exposes. To be fair-minded I have linked two articles from columnists, one from the TZ and the other (and my personal hero) Mr Bekdil of the HDN:

?Fetih 1453?: ?stanbul, not Constantinople!

BURAK BEKDİL - Conquest 1453

I would encourage members to also read the comments below the articles (particularly the final comment under the TZ article, which if true is even more of a reason for me to not watch!)

I'm interested in reading other people's thoughts.

I am planning on going to see this film but thought I'd wait until after the 1st week of viewing and the crowds.

Re: Fetih-1453

i logged on and was about to post a thread about the same thing Charlote ive watched a preview and and read a review too
this isnt an antiwar film but glorifying the conquest of Istanbul which was dreadful ive read some accounts where the streets were running with blood
its strange that while the British Empire is scorned and condemned for its imperialism the Ottoman Empire doesnt receive the same condemnation
in sure if the British made a gung ho film like exalting its bloody conquests it would be badly received
"Conquest 1453" hits cinemas (SETimes.com)

heres a clip from the official trailer.with engish subs

Re: Fetih-1453

I would like to see this for it's entertainment value if nothing else. I would not put too much historic fact into the narrative for obvious reasons, but at the end of the day it is based on an historical event.

It looks to be well made and produced if nothing else.

On the reverse side, other than Aya Sofya and a few other exceptions, Christian places of worship were left intact.

if Istanbul was belong to Ottoman in the past, and was conquested by other nations, i believe, it has been ''movied'' more than 10 times until today..i m pretty sure you could write the same post what i believe is; you are formal..whenever there is a post here which is critising Turkey&Turks, you always get the front seat Charlotte..when the topic is Turkey, we are always at the last place about humanity..luckily you are here and we have chance to improve ourselves i do not care what you think as you dont care mine..last 2 things, we all pray god that Istanbul was conquested..and will be ours forever..secondly , please start to write you threads telling how rude i am thats all you can do..

Re: Fetih-1453

Cenkcenk,

You're not being rude but you are missing my point. As much as I have criticised the positive publicity for this film, it is not because it is Turkish. I am a duel national who chooses to live in Turkey and I enjoy my life here. This is a relevant topic - it is a recently released movie and as you can see by the two links which I have posted, it is being widely discussed at the moment (in Turkey).

I often comment on other topics such as the war in Afghanistan and Iraq (which I am against) I support freedom for Palestinians and I'm sure on one or two topics we'd agree, it's just as shame that your own judgemental perception of me clouds your view of my opinion on this topic. My reasoning for my disgust is not simple anti-turkish sentiment - it is because the film is glorifying war in an extremely self-congratulatory manner.

If you're happy about the films production then that is your right. However, please don't assume I'm anti Turkey because I am not.

I should also point out that I watched the trailer whilst seeing another movie (before I read anyone elses opinion about the film, or realised it was becoming a tad controversial) and I had a bad feeling about it - I commented then to my husband that I wouldn't be coming to watch it and he asked why, to which I replied "because it seems to be glorifying war".
At least I now know that I'm not the only one who felt that way after watching just the trailer.

I don't particularly like war films and can't remember any that I might have watched - it wouldn't be a genre that I'd choose.
