Walking and Treking
My wife and I are hopefully moving out to Altinkum this summer. We both enjoy walking. Are there any local walks (hikes) into the mountains and are there any maps available?

Re: Walking and Treking
I too used to be an avid walker and fell walker, but I do not have the time to dedicate. I think you may have to dig very deep maybe in to your local library before moving here to check on possible isolated books that may have been written by keen walkers who may have walked in the area, but don't hold your breath. I am not aware of any guides. (ha! if only old wainwright had found the time to come here and follow the odd goat track)! If you visit the Millipark near Kusadasi, you will get a guide at the entrance to a fascinating days walk through the canyon. Stout shoes a must + pic nic.

Hi Jack,
I dont know of any designated walk areas but there are lots of lovely places to go walking if you make you way out past the Aqua Park toward Akkoy, also the back road through Miletos that leads to Soke is gorgeous, very scenic and good for bird watching :-)

Re: Walking and Treking
will really need to know the laws regarding access to open land and the mountains. some of the mountains look fairly severe in parts and i doubt that there will be rescue facilities if you get in trouble.
When we were in spain we got hold of some old military maps that were the nearest to ordnance survey maps but i doubt many of these countries will have mapped out for commercial purposes.

Re: Walking and Treking
Hello Jack,
I also enjoy walking the countryside but could find no maps detailed enough to wander to far of the beaten track.
I found a book called, 'Landscapes of Turkey, Bodrum @ Marmaris' a Sunflower book by Brian and Eileen Anderson. It is mainly for walkers but covers driving tours and picnic areas, even a bit of cooking. This book is now out of print. I managed to find a copy at the local library and scanned all the walks of interest for me. It has clearly defined walks with hand drawn maps of different lengths and ease. I live on the Bodrum Penisula during the summer and its good to get away into the hills, but its hot so early or late starts and plenty of water, maybe a can of efes for halfway.
Hope this helps
Alan

Re: Walking and Treking
Many thanks for all your info. Maybe when I get out there we could start a rambling club?
Cheers

Re: Walking and Treking
Thanks to Alan, J, B, I looked up the book he mentioned on amazon and I'm now the proud owner of 3 books:- Bodrum to Marmaris (20 walks),Antalya to Demre (14 walks), and Kas to Dalyan (15 walks). All with excellent discriptions plus list of camp sites etc. I have a scanner, so if anyone is interested in a perticular area. Contact me via email and I'll send you a scan. I beleive the most popular exchange rate is Tetley Tea Bags lol.......I'll work out a price soon...watch this space. Sorry, probably not allowed to do that due Copyright rule (; (;
