Well Andy, I'll try to explain as best I can. A few years ago I had an African Grey Parrot, but birds of this kind need a lot of attention which sadly I couldn't give to him. The lady who is taking Rocky doesn't work, so he'll have constant company.
So I decided that the next best thing for me to do would be to buy some breeding birds. That way they would have the company they need & I would benefit from the hand rearing. I'm a BIG animal lover so it seemed logical. I'd also get a few bob back from my hobby too.
So I bought a pair of African greys and have been breeding them since. In November I added the Senegals, so I now have 2 pairs of parrots. I'm looking to add a third pair soon.
These aren't pets, in fact if you put your hand near the greys they would make quite a mess of your finger!
I don't leave the babies with the parents for rearing because if I did that the chicks would end up wild like the parents you see?
It's a bit of a masochistic hobby I suppose because hand rearing is tiring, but you've seen Rocky & his mate, I get a lot of pleasure from it in the end.
One day when I have more time I will have a parrot as a pet, but right now it wouldn't be fair to the bird.
