Opening bank accounts & paying bills

Hi Guys, We are counting the days til the 12th May and we can spend 2 weeks in our apartment in Turgutries. This is only our second visit and we need to open a bank account while we are there. Can anyone please talk us through the procedure and perhaps recommend the best bank for English people. Also once the account is open we need to put enough money in to pay for our electricity/water/gas bills but we have no idea how we will arrange for the bills to be paid once we are back in England. I assume we will also need to pay some kind of community charge and would appreciate all the help we can get. Thank you so much

Re: Opening bank accounts & paying bills

Hi Jackie
Have you a tax referance number as I
needed one to open my account at Garanti
in Yalikavak.
I also set up a electricity payment arrangement after
producing a electric bill at the bank.
I could not do this with gas so at the moment I pay
each individual bill seperatly,at Garanti Bank, whenever I'm there.
Water charges are arranged through our Sitesi.
I have also set up a standing order,at Garanti Bank, for Sitesi monthly fees.
Oh,and don't forget to register your property at the local Belediye
for "Coucil Tax" within 2 months of receiving it or you will be liable to a fine,
which is what happened to me.
Bol sanslar

Just in case this helps anyone, I have opened an account with HSBC in England and once i have opened one in Turgutreis, I can transfer money between the two for £10 per time which isnt too bad. You can open an account in Turkey from England but they charge £100 to set it up. We can then set up a payment system for the electricity. We are off on Monday so I will post more details when I return.

Hi, we need to open a bank account also when we are next in Akbuk, you mention a "tax ref no." where do we get this from. Are the tax ref nos. only for UK people living permanently in Turkey? I have read on the forum that we need a sterling and TL account. We are purchasing a villa which will be ready in Sept 08. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Muggy One.To open a Bank Account you need a Tax No. This you will get from your local Maliye Office.Once the bank account is open then you can pay all your bills through this.If you Bank with HSBC. then you cannot pay the water. You would have to ask somebody to pay it for you.We use HSBC and as a previous poster says the transfer cost is only 10 GBP's if you bank with them in the UK.I send them a Fax ( you must set this up before you leave and it's free ) if it goes before 10-00 am UK time then the money is in my Turkish Bank by 15-00 hrs the following day. Can't fault the Bank and we get super service plus I set this up in the Uk ( which I don't recommend ) and it was free. You just have to have an address for the Tax People and also the Bank. It can be a Rental Property or a permanant address. Hope this helps.

Just go into any local bank with your new tax number (got from the local Tax office) and take your passport and a pen. Maybe take some money too?
You may want a YTL - £ linked account. There are other sorts- just ask.
I use Finansbank in Bodrum - tried HSBC but awful service.

Most banks have online banking like the UK.

Community charge (i guess you mean complex fees?) are usually paid to your Complex bank account monthly (if you are on a complex of course). There are many ways. You can set up direct debit monthly either from UK account or your new Turkish account. Or you can pay every 6 months in advance.
I found there are fees for doing inter-bank transfers unlike the UK.

Your Council tax is paid (twice yearly i think) at the Council tax office (funnily enuff) called Beliyde or something. (citation needed!)

Hope it helps a little. Others will clarify with superior knowledge.
