Definitive 'threshold' for ordering goods from Amazon, Ebay etc

I've searched this and other forums, plus a bunch of government websites, but I can't seem to find anything that sets things out once and for all. Only anecdotal comments such "I've never had problems and I've ordered X, Y and Z" or "I had to pay tax on X, Y and Z".

If I order something from abroad, for example let's say a network router, what is the value above which customs will hold it and I'll then have to go through the usual rigmarole plus pay taxes etc? Is there a way to "automate" process, i.e. ok, so even if I have to pay tax, is there a way I can just do this at the door when it is delivered?

Or does it depend on the type of goods I am ordering?

Or am I naively thinking that there isn't an element of random "how is the customs guy feeling this morning" to it

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
From which country do you think to import?? And what you definitely want to import?? Is it going to be a shopping?? Details are important..i am working in a Belgian transport company in Izmir and i know quite all the rules about customs
but i need details..beside this, if you just need one piece, you can try Cool Gadgets at the Right Price - Worldwide Free Shipping - DealExtreme , chinese goods, up to 100 usd no tax..you do the payment by your credit card over paypal..shipping free..it takes approx 15-20 days..coming from HongKong post to PTT and they deliver it to you..

Thanks for the response cenkcenk79, and for the link.

It was more a general question but typically I like to import things from either the US or the UK. These are for my own personal use, not as part of any business, and I would maybe want to do this perhaps 4-5 times a year.

Generally it would electronic gadgetry or books (last year I had a £250 delivery of books for my daughter from Amazon UK held which I sent back as they wanted to tax me on it at some absurd rate).

When importing personal goods, turkish customs rules works a bit different than business goods. The owner of the goods has definitely to be in Izmır Customs Warehouse when collecting them. There must be a list of the goods prepared by you both in English and Turkish. Also that list must include the value of the goods. If the total value rises, the tax you are going to pay is going to raise.I am not sure about amount but there is a bottom limit for value and taxes. Also you are going to pay to the customs broker who is going to clear your personal goods..and as i know they charge min 200-300 EUR..and ofcourse you have to arrange a little truck or lorry ( depends on weight and dimensions of your goods )to deliver your goods to your house from customs warehouse..
In my opinion, if they are not so so so personal its better to buy new ones
