Hello and help

Hello,

My name's Kate,

I usually get most of the answers I need through trusty old google, but this one has me stumped despite a lot of deep searching, so I hope you can help.

I'm a moderately successful freelance writer. My clients are publishers, agencies and organisations all over the world and I work exclusively online.
If I were to live in Turkey and carry on my work, which involves meetings on Skype with international clients on my own computer in my own home, but no work-related dealings with anybody in Turkey, would I need a permit? I'm certainly not depriving anyone of a job. I am simply bringing my existing job to Turkey.

And given that this would be OK (I really hope it is) who would I pay income tax to, and how?

Re: Hello and help

Hi Kate and welcome to the forum.

I’m doing something similar and never needed a work permit or to pay tax.

Re: Hello and help

Hi Katie-atie-atie-ate, I would have to go along with Jacey. Who is going to know while you are sitting in your living room playing with your computer you are in fact working? If on the other hand you were to set up an office, this of course would mean permit and tax returns.

If your income from this work is going to drop into an account here in Turkey and (due to your success) is regular, substancial and from companies, this could possibly attract the attention of the authorities. What is you arrangement in the country you are thinking of relocating from?

Re: Hello and help

Thank you both. No wonder you're smiling.

However, Kemerkid, you have identified my problem. If my account stays in the UK, I'm not sure where that leaves my tax arrangements. From the Inland Revenue advice, I have to earn the money in the UK to pay tax, so it makes sense to leave it there. But it's a shame because the banks in Turkey pay such good rates of interest.

I only earn a living mind. I'm not dripping with cash!

Re: Hello and help

Katie888,

I work for myself in a consultancy basis and courtesy of today's IT and Media I go to Turkey but still work via the internet, Skype, Voip or whatever.
All my work is in the UK but I just happen to conduct some of it by those means while having a cold beer in either our place or even in a bar, basically anywhere with WiFi.
I have nothing to declare in Turkey and try my best to reduce any burden as much as I can in the UK for that matter, but my earnings can also be transferred from a UK bank to my Turkish bank account to benefit from the interest rates.
No problem.

Re: Hello and help

Certainly will Kemerkid. I've learned most of what I need to know on this site, without ever having to ask (until now obs).

To answer your point ... I currently live in the UK, but really want to reduce the pressure a bit by living somewhere more chilled and reducing my outputs a bit. I absolutely LOVED Turkey when I visited earlier this year. Drove lone gun from Antalya to Dalaman and had a fantastic time. Saw every ancient ruin on the way.

I'm a pretty independent spirit, and I did wonder how that would go down in Turkey. But everyone was brilliant. I didn't meet any sexist pigs of the kind friends (who have never actually been to Turkey) warned me about!

Your wonderful forum has taught me everything I need to know pretty much.
