Hi there! English university student in need of help!

Hello everyone!

I'm a student studying Linguistics at Queen Mary, University of London, and for my dissertation I am studying the colour terms in English and Turkish - specifically how having 2 distinct words for 'light blue' and 'dark blue' in Turkish ('mavi' and 'lacivert') affects the way a Turkish speaker perceives blue.

I originally planned to recruit Turkish students to complete the study (a reaction time test), however this fell through and I have very little time in which to collect my data.

If anyone from this forum (note: please tell me if I'm better off posting this in another section!) is able to take part, I would be incredibly grateful! To participate, you just need to be a native Turkish speaker (i.e. it is your first language) who is over 18 years old and has access to their own computer (you will need to install a piece of software to run the test). The whole process of installing and taking the test should take no more than 20 minutes, and once again, if anybody is interested I would be so grateful!

Thanks so much, and I look forward to any responses.
Tom

Hi Tom,

A good introduction and a very interesting topic. I would help but Turkish is not my first language. I am sure you will get some volunteers, but there may be concerns around downloading software. Can you give any assurances that it is virus free?

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Bruce

Obviously you've spotted the software issue as well Bruce. There are others, word perfect English and lack of research into this forum.

Welcome to the forum Queen mary Tom, contribute to the forum by all means, we get all sorts here but forget about infecting the machines of the elderly who rely on them for company.

Hi Bruce,

I have had the software installed for a number of months, and have had friends use it on their computer too, and it seems absolutely fine. It was developed by a psychologist (from the University of Nottingham, I think) and there's several testimonials to it if you google "psychopy testimonials" (I would link, but sadly I'm not at 15 posts yet) - in short, it's virus free, just in case that was putting anyone off!

It can always be downloaded (saved to desktop) and scanned for virus before installing.

Good idea!
As a matter of interest, are there many native Turkish speakers on the forum or is it largely English expats?

Welcome from me too QMTom, I would say the majority are English speaking with a love of Turkey who either Live, have a Holiday Home, or enjoy holidays there.
