Found this article recently, may be of interest to some,

“The cure for ignorance is to question." Extremists exist because they don't study and don't question, but believe corrupt clerics blindly.”

Re: why islam mystifies me

That is my point, Muslims are being denied from birth the right to question the why's and wherefor's of Islam.

I'm a lapsed Catholic and it isn't a problem per se, but guess what the punishment is for a lapsed Muslim?

Re: why islam mystifies me

What mystifies me is why someone's 'religious' feelings seem to take priority these days.

After the Paris murders my first reaction was that the magazine had been foolish to publish, but then after thinking about it, I have come to another conclusion.
Personally I dislike the Charlie Hebdo style of publication; it's gratuitously offensive and crude but in a free country I am free to ignore it, so I do.

If I have strong feelings about politics, environmental causes, or poetry, for example, anyone is free to criticise my opinions and say what they like so why is 'religion' deemed to be superior? My feelings could be hurt by someone's criticism of my politics but so what.
Why do we feel under pressure to pussyfoot around it, particularly Islam? Whether someone is 'religious' or not is a private matter and not part of the legislation in a secular country.
This is so important because if 'religion' is placed on ANY kind of a superior status it is an inhibitor to free speech. Although I respect the Pope I'm afraid my immediate reaction to his comments about Moslems retaliating, was to say 'well he would say that wouldn't he, being a religious leader' .
This is NOT to say that anyone should be deliberately offensive but we are all equal. We all have feelings and we all know good manners.

I at first posted a comment, but then realized that I don't want to be tracked down and killed by anyone from the religion of peace. I couldn't delete my post here. All I could do was edit it. I apologize to anyone who might have been offended by my thoughts.

Re: why islam mystifies me

Perhaps the reason Islam is so confusing and conflicting is that for most of us we cannot read what the Muslim should be believing in. The Bible has been translated (not well in some cases) and is accessible, from a basic understanding of Islam I was under the impression that this was a religion that had its starting point in violence. The Bible and Christianity conversely is based on love and peace. The Muslim way is one of follow me or suffer the violent consequences, one only has to see what is going on in Syria with ISIS at the moment! The Koran cannot be argued unless you speak old Arabic so is far more open to being taught by some who carefully pick the bits out that suit knowing that they will encounter no arguments against since most Muslims can not speak Arabic either! It is spoon feeding with no expectation of intelligent thought provoking dialogue. The bottom line is of course that many of the beliefs from the Christian church and the Muslims are compatible the bit that does run contrary is the one of free will, in a Christian country we have the free will to reject religion, the Muslim does not really have that luxury although in our village I estimate that 80% of the population never cross the threshold of the mosque. Atheist Muslims perhaps?

Re: why islam mystifies me

each to his own i say. the newspapers rake things up on purpose thats how they sell. i have had no problems with muslims i know that has been to do with the faith they hold, a murderer and low life that has a pea for a brain exists in all faiths and i feel sorry that many muslims may now feel threatened or even fear going on the streets because of the newspapers missreporting and the tv is just as bad.
