Galata Kulesi (Galata tower)

I have passed the Galata tower ( Galata Kulesi) many a time on my way to visit my friend who has a music shop in Galip Dede Cad beside the Tünel, I had never really thought much about it, apart that its a draws many tourists.

It has always been there to me , a constant , and one of these places you take for granted ,you always mean to visit but never get round to it , plus now its comercialised and swarming with tourists , enough to put anyone of . I have always thought of it as having Islamic origins , maybe Ottoman , so to my surprise, my music/owner friend told it wasn't but Christain, and its old name was Tower of Christ ( Christea Turris) and was Genoese origin and built .

He also told me that a man in the 16 century flew from this Tower from Karaköy Europe all the way across Üsküdar Asia flying over the Sinan Pasha mansion , in the time of Sultan Murad Khan, who on seeing him do this viewed him and his exploit as dangerous ,gave him a bag of Gold and exiled him , The flyer name was .Hezârfen Ahmed Çelebi. I was reminded of it when I came across the picture above , and rememered his telling of it, which I found it interesting, and you may as well , if your not as re-miss as me, and visit the tower .

Re: Galata Kulesi (Galata tower)

We went there last month - fabulous views from the top. The lift took you to nearly the top - but then had to walk an extra 2 x flights. The walk up to the tower was more difficult. I lost 10 lbs in the 10 days we spent in Istanbul! So much walking - and we never took the tram or the underground there.

We stayed in a really lovely little 12 x bedroom hotel called El Blanco which is only a 5 minute walk from the Blue Mosque. Can highly recommend it. If you stay there you get 20% off food and drink too - and the food was magnificent.

There was an interesting movie made about this legend around 20 years ago .
Cannot remember the title of the movie.

Re: Galata Kulesi (Galata tower)

There is a secret base underneath. It was shown on the Bond film The World is Not Enough - and not a lot of people know that.

Whilst I was in Turkey a man was on TV because he had reenacted the original flight from the Tower with a base jump
