Taxi overcharge in Istanbul

Taxi over charge:

Quote:
Up to 10 years in jail sought for taxi driver for overcharging tourist

Prosecutors in Istanbul are demanding up to 10 years in jail for a taxi driver who cheated a tourist by unnecessarily extending a journey. Prosecutors accuse the taxi driver of committing “aggravated fraud.”

Tourist stopped the taxi in the Kadıköy district on Istanbul’s Asian side to go to the Gökçen Airport, also on the Asian side. According to the prosecutors’ indictment, taxi driver realized that the tourist was not familiar with Istanbul so took him over the Bosphorus to the European side via the Sultan Selim Bridge, before returning to the Asian side again. He then further extended the trip by taking a longer route to the airport.

Unnecessarily long trip caused the tourist to miss his flight, while also ending up paying much more. Driver has denied the charges, claiming that he got confused and took the wrong exit to the Sultan Selim Bridge.

Re: Taxi overcharge in Istanbul

Over the years I have had at least five Istanbul taxi drivers trying it on, even one pointing to the radio frequency saying it was the price, you have to watch them, they have fins.

The other thing to avoid if you are going to the airport, is letting the taxi driver know that you are going to the airport by alternative means. they are relentless, they will find 1001 reasons why you must let them take you in their taxi instead of catching the much cheaper Metro or havaş bus.

Re: Taxi overcharge in Istanbul

haha. someone here recommended booking online in advance. I will be expected to pay £20/euro for one way trip from airport to hotel. has anyone been to Egypt. its like 100 times worse!! almost all taxis are using rigged meters there. so whenever they say lets use the meter, instead of a fixed price, you know the meter is rigged and you will be paying a stupid amount for a 20 minute ride.

one driver didn't know the way to our hotel, so he asked like 5 different passing taxis how to get there. he used this as an excuse to increase the fare lol. I stuck to my guns, and we let him argue and cry to the hotel visitor/concierge man outside. what was really strange is that he even refused our cash and gave it back to me! oh well a free ride for me

Re: Taxi overcharge in Istanbul

using google maps on your phone is a good idea that way you can track which route the driver is taking short route or scenic route
You can even provide assistance if the driver doesn't know his way

When in Egypt/Arab/Gulf countries and getting a taxi somewhere I would always ask the concierge at the hotel roughly how much I should pay before setting off.

Re: Taxi overcharge in Istanbul

The worst try-on we ever had was the taxi driver in Marmaris who took us to Datca one afternoon, using the night meter on his cab. The 'bill' had risen to over 400TL by the time we arrived in Datca town centre.
We told him we needed to use the ATM to pay him, and he dropped us outside the Isbank, where our local friendly taxi rank is based. . .
We then refused to pay him the 400TL he demanded and showed him the taxi fares on the board.
It was an interesting few minutes and we ended up paying him 190. . .

One year and three months he got. He Claims he was 'confused because the customer talked a lot'. What a load of twaddle.
