Re: Izmir - Istanbul Express Train
What a wonderful link - maybe I am just a romantic, but I have started dreaming of places to travel via the train - Syria being one.... I can't wait to be a lady of "means" (instead of a mean lady) and have the time to do all the fab trips suggested.

Re: Izmir - Istanbul Express Train
Fantastic link Gail, thanks. Ferries and trains both sound good. Prices are fantastic too.

Re: Izmir - Istanbul Express Train
An alternative journey, much, much longer, is to get yourself to Denizli for about 5pm (there are trains from Izmir, Selcuk or Aydin) and catch the overnight Pamukale Express to Istanbul. It will probably arrive late, but it's a lovely trip, book a sleeping cabin, eat in the dining car and just enjoy the scenery and the atmosphere. (Though it was even better before TCDD privatised the catering).
