Moving to Izmir ?????
Hello
Long time since my last post re housing ...I think it was re problems selling my villa in Ovacik, well still not sold and the less said about that the better.
Anyway what I'm looking for is some advice if we do sell this season .
We have been looking at living in different areas of Turkey....our main objective of selling up in Ovacik has been to move into a more Turkish environment and to be able to enjoy a living working town /city all year round.
Its not only dead here for 6 months of the year but is also expensive . We had thought of simply moving down to Fethiye but have wondered what Izmir has to offer. Now we have visited a couple of times but don't have a real knowledge of the area and having our dog with us makes it all the more difficult to make extended visits anywhere.
Has anyone out there a more in depth knowldge of the area and how it compares with living just outside Fethiye.

Re: Moving to Izmir ?????
Hi Ginap
I'm sure that there will be someone with more knowledge of Izmir and surrounding places to help. I spent only a couple of days in Izmir about four years ago. It is an absolutely huge city and has contrasts like -we stayed in the old bazaar district of narrow roads and small shops but ate out along the modern sea front area. the traffic system was confusing and there is a lot of traffic!!
Good Luck
Gill

Depends on what your looking for really. Izmir has lots of areas to choose from. Some areas there are not any expats and other areas there are lots. Housing costs also vary depending on what area of the city you live in as well as costs of other things.....for example I live in Gaziemir (near the airport) and there are very few english speakers living out this way but the costs at the weekly pazaar are very cheap yet when I travel over to Karşiyaka I seem to meet lots of english speakers and the few times I have been to the pazaar there it is much more expensive compared to the Gaziemir one.

Re: Moving to Izmir ?????
God that really got me thinking !!!
Well I suppose what we're looking for is what we originally moved here for .......A different way of life but still with some of the trappings of the "good life" It would be great to be near some sort of coastal / beach area but we don't mind a shortish car journey for that, a reasonable cost of living would be good too unlike the area we live in which has now risen to meet the costs/needs /pockets of the yabanci community.
I know that by being on your guard you can outwit the rip off merchants but it has become a bore and maybe I won't find what I want in this area of my life.
Simple living with good food , friends ...a sprinkling of expats would be good too, decent hospitals [ not ancient but we are getting older ] .Year round living , not somewhere that shuts down in winter . Shall I go on ???

Urla is an up and coming area that has some expats and native Turkish english speakers and near to the beach. I have not spent much time there so I am not sure what the cost of living is there but I would venture to guess that it is not dirt cheap but not expensive either. There are a lot more houses and villas out that way as well. It is about 30 minutes from downtown Izmir but they have lots of the shop handy there and they are open year round. Living in Gaziemir is not bad, at least for me...it is apartment living out this way but I can get on my scooter and head out to Çeşme and be there in an hour. Ilica beach in Çeşme is one of the most under rated beaches in Turkey and it is a shame really because it is beautiful there. The beach has soft white sand and gental waves and you can wade out a long ways before it gets deep.

I guess I have been very lucky in that area as I have always kept quiet and in the background to look at prices and over hear what is said before I buy at an unfamiliar shop plus I tend to have a lot of time on my hands so I travel around a lot and scope out prices on things I am looking for. I can say that here in Gaziemir I have met lots of very friendly people and for the most part considering it is easy to tell I am a yabanci because I have a few more piercings and a couple tattoos, the local Turkish people have been very welcoming to me.

When I am in need of expats I can head downtown to Alsancak. There are lots of expats in that area as well as the Turkish-American Association ( You do not need to be an American to join as I belong and I am Canadian) and there is also a branch of the British Council down there too. As for health care...well my son has been to the local clinic here in Gaziemir a few times and had good experiences. It is not a fancy place at all. I have also received emergency treatment at the Buca hospital, a state hospital. I was pleasently surprised actually because it is an older hospital but it was very similar to the hospitals I was used to in Canada. Not fancy and even tough there were lots of people there the wait time was by far shorter than any wait time to see a doctor in a Canadian hospital as well as I was very lucky as the doctor I had spoke english. There are also several good hospital downtown. Most of them are private hospitals. I wrote this last year about my experience at one of the private hospitals in Izmir:
Quote:
Ege Sağlik Hastanesi-Izmir
I was recently not very well and we decided it was time to head to the hospital. It was a Sunday morning and we went to Ege Sağlik Hastanesi in Alsancak. It was a beautiful hospital and the staff was very friendly. After a looking me over they called in a specialist and very quickly readied me for the operating room. The specialist did not speak english but they had a staff member that spoke excellent english stay with me throughout the operation and in the recovery room. After I was transfered to my room and I must say it was more like a hotel than any hospital I have ever been in before in Canada. I do realize not all hospitals are this nice in Turkey so don't get me wrong, but I do recommend this hospital to anyone in Izmir that is in need of emergency services. Thankfully the next morning after seing the doctor I was discharged and have been home on the mend and I am finally back on my feet thanks to the excellent medical staff at Ege Sağlik Hastanesi.
