1400 year old grave found
İZMİR - Turkish Daily News
The İzmir Archeology Museum stated that a 1,400-year-old grave containing many historical artifacts made of terracotta was discovered in İzmir's Urla district during sewer construction work conducted by the local municipality.
Upon the discovery on the construction site, the district was approved as an archeological protection area and official archeologists from the İzmir Archeology Museum were dispatched to monitor the sewer system installation. The grave is thought to belong to the Eastern Roman Empire era.
The finding was 1.5 meters below the surface and roof tiles elaborately surrounded the grave. Preliminary analysis dated the grave back to 650 A.D., belonging to an adult whose gender could not be determined at this time.
İzmir Archeology Museum Curator Ersin Atakal told an Anatolia news agency reporter that the artifacts in the grave would be examined under the supervision of excavation specialist Professor Güven Bakır.
It was announced that sewer system installation construction would continue without disturbing the excavation area taken under protection
