Domestic Violence

A total of 800 abusive men in Turkey's province of İzmir have been expelled from their homes since the recent passage of a law to protect women against domestic violence.

In March, the Law to Prevent Violence against Women and Protect Family Members was passed. Under the scope of the law, male perpetrators can be removed from their homes for periods between three and six months. Prior to the recent legislation, women would be removed from the home and placed under protection; now the situation has been reversed so male perpetrators of domestic abuse, not the victims, are forced to leave.

In İzmir alone, 800 men have been ordered to leave their homes for up to six months since the passage of the law approximately 40 days ago. Women remaining at home are under 24-hour police surveillance.

Re: Domestic Violence

Absolutely!!

High time domestic abuse was treated seriously. Whether it be men or women inflicting the abuse. The only bit that concerns me about this report is what protection the victims would have after the 3 or 6 month exclusion from the home. Perpetrators of this kind of abuse are likely to go on offending and I dread to think what might happen to the partner once the abuser can legitimately return to the family home.

This is great news.
Izmir is a CHP city, and is obviously enacting the new procedures to their fullest abilities. Well done to Izmir police department.

I hope other regions will follow suit, however we should still be concerned with the fact that after 6 months where will these women turn? Remain in the marriage or be left to face a much harsher punishment?
Without financial support from family or the government it is difficult for single mothers in Turkey.

Charlotte, I'm rather surprised the number is so high. Everyone I have met from Izmir is very intelligent and civilised.

Re: Domestic Violence

Lol, it is a modern city for sure, and statistics suggest that abuse occurs more in rural areas, but Izmir is not immune to spouse violence.
If you believe the statistics reported by the 2009 Turkish university survey, which the HRW org based a report on, then approximately 11 million women in Turkey have suffered either physical or sexual abuse by a husband or partner.
It only makes sense that some of them live within the Izmir region (have suspicions about a few local men myself) and if I'm brutally honest I would imagine the number should be much higher.

Man abuses a woman, however much he might think they deserve it, is a coward and a thug in my book. Whatever country you live in.
