Meis / Kastelorizo

If you're getting a bit bored with the usual 2 or 3 hours wandering around the harbour and having a meal in one of the very expensive cafes, have a go at climbing the 400 steps to the plateau behind the village. You'll get a new perspective on the layout of the village.

If you want a slightly less strenuous walk, take the road to the right and go up past the Greek Army's Garrison and continue on up the hill to the airport.

Re: Meis / Kastelorizo

Interesting to see that photo KKOB.
I cannot believe how much restoration work has gone on over the last few years.
When I first moved to Kaş you used to just see a sprinkling of lights in the harbour area of a night time. Now there are loads stretching all along from the harbour right to the end of that piece of coastline! I,m convinced that what is a sleepy little town by day becomes a heaving, bustling place by night

Re: Meis / Kastelorizo

I don't know when you last went over there Soo, but there's a huge amount of restoration work being done. There also seem to be new-builds springing up all over the place. The last time I was there, the Rhodes ferry came in and discharged about 200 holidaymakers and several trailerloads of construction equipment.

I had a look in the little museum in the old mosque and, whilst the display in there wasn't anything to get excited about, I was surprised at a couple of old photographs showing how densely packed the houses were around the period between the wars.

Re: Meis / Kastelorizo

I went in the spring and was surprised at the amount of building work just in the harbour area alone.
Yes the photos in the museum are amazing, the amount of boats and sea helicopters in the harbour were quite surprising.
Did it not say somewhere that the population used to be in the region of 3,000?

I love wandering around the alleyways and taking pics of old next to new, especially the doorways.

Re: Meis / Kastelorizo

Apparently at the end of the 19th century the population was around 10,000. It dropped to about 3,000 in the 1920s. Now it's down to just over 400 full-time residents.

Uzumlu,
The guy who runs Caretta gift shop told me that the figure was 300 and that when its census time the Greek Govt will fly Kastellorizan Greeks over from Australia to make sure the numbers are always above 300 if necessary

Angela
If you do decide to go across to Meis make sure you book the day before as you have to hand your passport in if you are travelling outside of a large group i.e a group travelling from Fethiye for a visa run.

Re: Meis / Kastelorizo

Loved the pictures KKOB. Visited Kaya Koy last week and loved it. You have made me determined to visit Meis when we return next year, it's one of those things we keep putting off (early start to get there I think).
