Reflections on our application for renewal of STRP

I thought it might be helpful to others for me to record some brief reflections following our latest application for STRP renewal, following the recent closure off the Kas office and the need now to go to Kemer.

Firstly, we were able to complete the English language version of the online application. This was reasonably straightforward, especially given the support of the Doc Martin files. However we did experience a few hiccups - including our inability to get the application to accept our insurance details (despite our provider being on of the approved list). We therefore recorded that we had SGK - following which the online system then approved our first application stage and allowed us to pick an interview slot. You are of course able to amend/update any info on your application form when you arrive and sign it.

Interviews for the Kas region are now in Kemer, an interesting and picturesque trip around the coast road and then through the mountains - took about 2.5 hours each way. Its a 350km round trip - so you need to be prepared for a loooooong day!

Having previously experienced the ever helpful service in Kas, this is a somewhat different experience. In short, I would highlight 3 significant areas of difference:-

1. Whilst there are several staff and everything ran on time for our appointment etc, we were quite surprised that for a foreigners dept most staff had only a very limited use of rudimentary English (I think they are far more used to dealing with Russians and Scandinavians).

2. Some staff stated their unhappiness at the extra work their are experiencing from our area caused by the closure of the Kas office.

3. Staff were clear in wanting comprehensive information and evidence. For example, along with the usual passport copy, application copy, photos, TAPU and insurance certificates etc, they asked for a number of other things we have never been asked for before…. including a signed, dated and stamped reference from our bank manger for each of us: A Turkish translation of our Apostilled marriage certificate and a conformation from the Nufus that we still owned our property (despite our current TAPU being less than a year old!)

Thankfully, we had the support of a local translator who assisted with the communication challenges. Most importantly, he was able to secure agreement that we could supply any missing information by post later - rather than a further return journey before our application could be processed.

My overriding impression - this would have been very significantly more challenging without the support of the translator

Re: Reflections on our application for renewal of STRP

Sounds quite good in comparison to Alanya. They also speak very little English in our "foreigners dept" and the appointments run far behind so that every day (from what I gathered) at least 5 people who are still waiting at 5pm are sent away and told to come back the next morning. The next day they are seen first so the people with the first appointments are seen late and that continues on and on and on..........One of the people waiting with us at 4.30pm went into one of the offices that hadnt asked for another customer to go ın since the last left 30 minutes before. They 'officer' was sitting with his feet up on the desk playing games on his phone. When he was asked if he would process their papers he said no because he was very tired and didnt want to see anyone else that day.

I have used Alanya foreigners only twice ,I never had a problem .They are the police out of the old office .With the blue book . The Nufus is a normal request, like with the bank. But i have never Apostilled any paperwork even my marriage cert even though it is a requirement . It all depends on who you see .

Re: Reflections on our application for renewal of STRP

We were only offered 1 year. We were told that it is the policy in our province. I could argue my point in Turkish that they had already robbed me of a month by an admin error (which took a lot of sorting out, and several round trips of 100km). We did get 2 year eventually. Clearly there is some flexibility. We have had continuous RPs since 2003.

It depends on your age. Pensioners aren't a concern for them like youngsters with no visible means of support. When we've provided income evidence in the past it has been treated as unnecessary. Also we have never been asked for a marriage certificate, let alone an apostilled version.
The tapu does not reflect the full address of your home. It never has. We were asked to provide additional evidence such as a utility bill at our last appointment in lieu of a letter from the belediye confirming our full address.
