Restaurants etc... Paying the Jack and Jill....

This cropped up the other night.....

Nice meal, Nice restaurant, party of 4.

(All restaurants will gladly accept Euros).

The bill comes to 63YTL

The bill is paid in Euros and the change is given in YTL

Busy restaurant so waiter says farewell to guests and dances off to another table.

When the party worked out their change later that evening, the exchange rate for the YTL given in return was some 20 percent below normal Euro market rates.

Its common practise so heed this warning. If you pay in Euros demand your change in Euros too.

They wont be offended.

The first time I went to Turkey (Marmaris), I got to know one of our waiters quite well.He thought he looked like Jasper Carrott because someone told him so.We spoke about lots of things and the chat got around to tips.I am an Electronics & Electrical technician but we agreed that during the summer and considering he lived in Turkey, he was probably earning more than me !!

This seems to be happening more and more in Kusadasi..... Anyone experienced it elsewhere?

As a Turkish Citizen I have experienced it many times as well when I try to pay in foreign currencies. It is always some 10-20% less everytime than the normal market rates. Last time I've had 3 brandies and a beer in one of the popular places in Altinkum I often go; paid £20 and told them that I might have some more drinks next time with the change. Next time I had one more beer and have been asked to pay for the next one. But the bill should be not more than a 30 YTL.
