Chris: Can't understand why they wanted insurance details when they expected you to pay up front. In that case it was none of their business whether you had insurance. Devlet hospital only charged about 18 ytl for a 40 minute iv drip...I don't know what was in the drip but think it was some kind of muscle relaxant.

Ian: Thanks for the tip about subsistence. We all think that these things won't happen to us but they do so it's very important to have good insurance and to know what the policy covers. Know what you mean about the Irish weather...highest rainfall in about 30 years. We did have 3 dry days in July because I spread granular weed killer on my garden. The instructions said I should water the garden if no rain within 3 days. It didn't rain for those 3 days and I left it too long before watering! After that, I used a liquid weedkiller that needed dry weather for 6 hours and it hasn't stop raining since about an hour after I used it.

Re: Hospitals

Hard to believe, Chris, that there's such a huge difference in price between the two hospitals, even allowing for Ozel's fancy private facilities. Pity Devlet couldn't add a private wing to the main hospital and make some money from holidaymakers' insurance. The profit could go towards improving the public facilities. They laughed at me when I asked where could I get a cup of coffee.

That is a nice thought Maria, because when reading this, I get a bit uncomfortable,
it would indeed be nice if some of the insurance money of tourist could go to the Devlet hospital, and so could improve the hospital facilities........

Re: Hospitals

Hello everyone,

I`m new to these forums but would like to share my positive experience with a Turkish doctor.

I was in Kusadasi last week and one day before my departure I had temperature with muscle pain and coughing. So, my boyfriend persuaded me to go see a doctor. We called our guide and she sent a doctor to the hotel.
He came within 15 mins from the call - young doc with perfect English. He took me to his private clinic which is on the seafront, next to Sozer hotel in order to give some additional treatment. He only needed my insurance and I did not have to pay for anything. I just had to fill in a form with personnal info. The rest was done by the nurse. He also wanted to see me the next day to be sure that I`m ok for the road.
My boyfiend accompanied me to the clinic and was offered coffee/tea for several times and he told me they were very nice. These people were very professional and kind and I highly recommend them.

At the end, with medication he gave me and the instructions, I was well within 5 days just like he told me!

Here are the details:

Dr. Onder Karabulut
Mediclinic Health Center
+ 90 256 613 16 00
Ataturk Bul.Belvu Center 68/4 A
Kusadasi

Greetings and stay healthy!

Thumbs up Re: Hospitals

i also had to go and see Dr Karabulut and agree with everything that was posted above.

I had a really bad ear infection that lasted a month. I had to go everyday for a 2 weeks to have my ear packed with steroid dressing and I was also on antibiotics.

His english is perfect so there are no translation problems and also his nursing staff are very kind and considerate.

I also just gave him my travel documents and that was all dealt with by his staff.

I didn't think I needed to go to the hospital and I had already taken my little boy the year before to the same doctor

I would highly recommend him

Re: Hospitals

Sorry to hear your relative ended up in hospital Maria but thankfuly she could enjoy the last week of her holidays.

I can understand why some foreigners head directly to the Ozel when anythings wrong but for things that can be treated in A&E then I choose the Devlet everytime; a 10th of the cost and just as good staff. My younger son fell a few weeks ago and had to have 2 stitches in his leg; as usual we took him to the Devlet and they were great with him. Yes the Ozel is modern and clean but so expensive. I had my appendix taken out there 4yrs ago and it cost me 2,000ytl.

Re: Hospitals

Thank you, Alison. I had hoped to try Greg's carvery in De Jazar (spelling) but after the traumatic star to the holiday we stayed pretty much close to home.

The staff at Devlet were brilliant. She was treated promptly. No waiting around for hours like at home. No telling symptoms to half a dozen people before seeing a doctor. They could teach the hospitals here a thing or two about efficiency. Don't know, however, whether things would have been different if they hadn't had the option of sending her to the private hospital for inpatient treatment.

I saw a sign afterwards in Guzelcamli for an English speaking doctor. The sign said that they deal with holiday insurance companies. Trouble is that anyone can hang up a shingle but that doesn't make them qualified or competent, so it's good to have Keira and Myrajane's recommendations for the doctor in Kusadasi.
