essential words 1.

Here are three words that are essential
VAR YOK MI/MU
Since there is no Turkish word for HAVE or HAVENT nor to ask about them, the following expressions are used.

VAR this is used to say there is something. .it exists
YOK this is used to say there isnt something it doesnt exist
MI/MU is used to ask if there is or if there isnt something. does it exist ?
VAR MI? is there/ does (whatever) exist ?
YOK MU ? isnt there/doesnt 'whatever' exist ?
TİP Think of MI/MU (and its other variations Mİ MÜ) as a spoken question mark M?İ

the 'something ' can be anything ... food children house money family car soup chips beer vodka sugar washing powder screws paint etc..whatever it is you are enquiring about,
learn this form and straight away you have increased your ability to communicate.

Lets look at them in practice.
in the first example you are asking if there is any bread.

and this is all you need to say...
Ekmek VAR MI?'
İs there bread ?

the answer can be
Ekmek Var..
bread have.
there is bread.

or the answer could be ...
Ekmek YOK
bread have not
no there isnt any bread.

or maybe you have looked in the bread cupboard outside the 'Bakkal dükkanı/grocer shop and its empty so you can ask inside the shop

Ekmek YOK MU ?
bread not have ?
dont you have any bread ?

that seems strange to us..but you cant translate Turkish word for word especially in everyday situations.

Now you are armed with these three little words there are endless ways you can use them...and understand the reply.

Taze süt VAR MI ?
fresh milk have?
is there fresh milk.?

Taze süt var
Fresh milk have (it exists)
there is fresh milk.

taze süt yok.
theres no fresh milk

the following examples are using İ and you on the ends ..can you see that.
can you translate them

ParaN var mı ?
ParaM var.
ParaM yok
paraN yok mu?
Araban var mı?
Arabam var
Arabam yok
Araban yok mu ?

and how about these into Turkish ..bit harder..but try without googles help!!
1.Have you a bigger size?
2.have you Vodafone kontörs?
3.there are Vodafone Kontörs
4.there are not Vodafone kontürs
3.have you children?
4.İ have children
5.i have not children
6.have you english books
7. have you small change.

I've had a go at the second one. Have I over complicated it?

Re: essential words 1.

Hi Firebrand..just a bit
although you have got the possessive agreement ok for something like this..you dont need it
you just ask
Vodafone kontörü var mı ?
you just need the Ü on the end to complete it
the important bit here is the VAR MI

you-borçum ne kadar?.....How much do I owe?
assistant-Nakit para?......Cash?
you-Evet..........Yes
assistant-Ikı yuz yeter......Two hundred is enough
