todays word is izlemek

izlemek means to watch and also to follow..so can be used in the sense of following someone or following a programme ...we use 'follow' in this way too.
also its used for watching . we have already looked at seyretmek which also means to watch...but in general izlemek is the preferred word.
takıp etmek also means to follow as does peşine düşmek..but they need looking at another time.

as usual lets start with the past tense and the past tense sign for this dotted vowel word is
the personal endings as always for the past tense are..
M and K ..for İ and We
N and NİZ for you/you
nil for he/she/it..and LER for they.
put them together
izle+Dİ+M...i followed/watched.
izle+di+K..we followed/watched
izle+di+N /NİZ you/you followed etc
izle+di ..he she it followed..izle+di+ler they followed.
'Bu akşam güzel bir fil izledik'
This evening we watched a nice film'
the negative form adds ME after the stem and before Dİ
izle+ME+Dİ+personal ending
and the question form in the past tense you add the question marker ... after the personal endings
izledin Mİ ?... did you watch?

if you want to ask İF you CAN watch you append EBİL to the stem and the question marker after the tense ending and before the personal ending..unlike the past tense!

izle-Y-EBİL-ir ..mi-y-im..the Ys are buffers.
say it ..iz-ley-ebeel-eer meeyeem..
practice saying it and it gets easier.
and its usual when asking if you can do something to use the simple timeless tense..İR..the books call it the aorist tense.

here is the present tense
the marker is İYOR..the personal endings
UM-UZ..for İ and We
SUN-SUNUZ for you/you
nil for he/sher/it..and LAR for they.
izl-iyor..the E is dropped
izliyorUM i am watching(or following)
izliyorUZ we are watching
izleiyorsun/sunuz you/you are watching..
izliyor he/she/it is watching..izliyorlar they are watching.

here are a few random examples of different ways to use izlemek
first using the personal participle..DİK
and since the endings that follow DİK almost all begin with a vowel then the K has to mutate.(only with LER/LAR does the K remain
1.'izlediğim film güzel değildi'
the film that i watched was no good'
izle+DİĞ+İM..that which i watched
değildi..it was not..değil not +Dİ ..the past tense

2.iskeleDE- izlediğim,z konser-çok heyecanlıdı
in the harbour-the concert we watched-very exciting was.
iskele+DE..the suffix DE means either 'in on at'
izlediğimiz konser..the concert which we watched
and this is different from saying...
konser izledik..we watched a concert.
heyecan means excitement..add the suffix LI(no dots its following A)
heyecanlı+DI ..for it was exciting.

here's one using a verbal noun
3. 'Maç- izlemeye- geldim'
'match- to watch- i came
izleme..is a verbal noun that can take personal and case endings.
izleme+Y+E ..E the directional case suffix meaning TO
the Y is a buffer between the vowels.
gel+di+m..past tense of come..i came

here' an example using -dikten sonra
4.'Film izle+dikten sonra yataçağız'
film after watching we will go to bed'
dikten sonra added to a verb stem means afterwards or after the verbs action

Lol Shirley,
I also honestly think that French is a lot easier then Turkish, but maybe this has to do with the brain barrier, their way of making sentences is so completely different to ours !
And they have a least three words for everything and everyword has three meanings,
but then, maybe if you stop trying to "understand" everything, it might get better, but I'm not in that stage yet...
look at this example : three words, no four for the same thing : seyretmek, izlemek, takıp etmek and also peşine düşmek (very strange this last one...).
I met a young Belgian girl in Turkey who goes to the international school in Izmir and she told me they are now learning how in Turkey so many word have so many meanings... (oh, she was young, she will grasp it)

By the way : is heyencanlı also used in the way we use it (well, you know being excited has sometimes another meaning to us.....)
