School info anyone, please....

Hi,

My husband and I would love to permanently move to southern or south west Turkey this summer with our children aged 7 and 11. Unfortunately we can't act until we find good quality english taught schools (primary, secondary level). The internet is only providing information on the big international schools in the major cities even though we would consider Izmir if we had to. They are however very very expensive. There is some mention in the forum of various private schools in the Fethiye and Antalya regions (perhaps there are others?) but no other leads to go on. Can anyone shed a bit more light, please? Our budget would be maximum £3k per child per annum. Does this sound reasonable? Any advice, and/or information would be very much appreciated.

Hi,

Thanks for responding so quickly. I did do a search but there isn't any specific information I'm afraid. Hopefully, someone out there can provide some more detail. I'm sure it would be of use to other members

There's not a great deal of info on here re schooling. I've just checked.
nnj, if you want info on schools in the fethyie area there's been a lengthy discussion on the Calis beach web site. Seems there a quite a few people on the site with kids at school.
Email me if you want the link. Not sure if I'm allowed to post it here.

Why do you want English taught schools?

Because I want the move to be as less traumatic for them as possible. It will be hard enough to leave family and friends behind without the difficulty of being thrown into a turkish speaking school. I'm sure with time they'll develop bilingual skills

nnj - I know of many families that have moved here to Turkey with children in tow and have only heard great things from the children being put in with other Turkish in a Turkish state or private school. I know some of these children personally and after just a few months, they astound me with their Turkish language proficiency.

Thanks Merv,

I don't doubt it at all but I know my children and they'll be completely freaked out by it (especially the 11 year old). We knew there are english schools in Northern Cyprus that teach in English and provide Turkish language lessons, as well as study of Turkish history and culture. I guess we're looking for something similar but in Turkey

There are definately a few english private primary and secondary schools in Fethiye. Not sure of the prices but i do remember people saying they were a lot cheaper than english private schools.

At age of 11-12, after primary school most Turkish children take a big test to see what type of middle school they will enter. The middle school is very important since it seperates those who will succeed from those who do not. Some of those high schools (called ANADOLU LISESI or KOLEJ for private ones) have all instruction in English. They are state sponsored and do not cost tuition, just the extras like books, uniforms, transportation and food. I have educated from one of them and there were some British students as well 17-18 years ago. I think for British residents they are not asking to take an exam. The only thing they would require would be to contact your children's school in Uk.
