Seasonal Affective Disorder - SADS

Hi, Not sure if I have posted this in the relevant forum but it was the best match I could find. I was just wondering, what with the onset of Autumn and darker nights here in the UK, if anyone who had previously suffered with this seasonal depression in the UK has benefitted health wise from a permanent move to Turkey. It would be interesting to know if the warmer climate has alleviated these symptoms (i.e. mild-moderate-severe depression with the lack of daylight hours). I look forward to hearing from you.

I don't think it is the temperatures so much as the fact that there is plenty of sunshine, even in winter. I know that I haven't suffered from SAD since living here.

Yes I would agree with that, everthings so much nicer in the sun. I have felt much better too. I was often very low in the Uk in winter.

Us poor people in the UK will have have suffered from SAD for the last two years as we've had no summer either this year or last year.

I've never sufferred from SAD but can imagine how it must be because we are all desperate to get away from our dire weather and a bit of sun certainly cheers us up.
For any genuine sufferer, I cannot think that moving away from the UK to Turkey can be anything other than a benefit.

I don't think I suffer from this disorder but I cherish my six weeks in Turkey every winter. It makes me feel younger and fitter (loads of walking) and the feeling of the sun on your back is therapeutic.

In addition, when I am not there I have the comfort of knowing that it won't be long before I am!!

Definitely suffered from SAD and the change has been pronounced. There are other things to take into account as well such as the low stress relaxed life in general but the daylight is great.

As we lived in the North East and I travelled to work by car I left in the dark, arrived in the dark then sat in an office all day. I left work in the light and got home in the dark - very depressing.

Even the winter months are bright and sunny here.

I am surprised that no one suffered from S.A.D.until it was invented, note invented not discovered, about ten years ago. Most people get thouroughly pissed off during the winter time.Maybe some think it looks good on their C.V.Just a thought really.

Hi Parrot,

Thank you for your contribution. SAD may have been given an official label 10 years or so ago but for those genuine sufferers it would have happened throughout their entire life (since childhood). I know people who cannot wait for the Autumn nights as they find the thought of life behind closed curtains an absolute joy. SAD's sufferers exist throughout the Autumn and Winter and only truly come alive with the advent of Spring. I hope that this helps you to understand a little more.
