Books for School
I apologise if this is in the wrong place but I'm trying to find anyone who has had to buy books for their children for nursery school. My son has just started in the local anne sinif (nursery?) and we are being asked to pay for books for him (this is on top of paper/pencils/pens/writing books/drawing bookd/coloured card/toilet paper/soap, etc, the list goes on!) My question is that these books are 50ytl each and he 'needs' 3 of them, does this sound the right price? Has anyone else out there had to pay this price for books with join the dots in? It's not about buying books, it's just that this seems expensive for what the books are!
Thanks
Sara

Re: Books for School
Hi Sara..why dont you look for similar in the nearest kırtasiye (stationery /bookshop) and compare the prices, you might even see the same books...then you will have a better ideaif you are being asked too much.
İ think 3 books for a little child is a bit too much....and at 50 ytl..thats almost 25 pounds..doesnt seem right.

Re: Books for School
Hi Sara
50YTL for each book sounds too much to me. Have a word with the teacher, find out where the books are coming from. If everyone in the ana sinif is going to have the books, then the stationary shop usually does a discounted deal, as so many people will be buying at once. My son was in ana sinif a few years ago, and yes prices have increased since then but not by that much. He is in his 3 class at school and at the most we pay about 20YTL for two books, one for Turkish and one for Hayat Bilgisi.
Hope that helps
Angie.

Re: Books for School
Hi Sara...
Cant debate whether it is expensive or not..but yes ana sinif can be expensive for some of those books...however 50 liras each does seem like an awful lot..
We paid 5 yrs ago..60 liras for books and 70 liras for kırtasiye supplies..
25 liras a month for lunches..
I have called one of my friends that her daughter attended and she is going to call another parent that is attending ana sinif this year..

Re: Books for School
just spoke to another friend that her son attended ana sinif last year..and they payed about 90 liras for books...3 or 4 ..she cant remember..100% excatly.
One question that she also brought up..is your son attending a private ( kres ) or a government ( devlet ) ana sinif ??? this can also make a difference..
if it is private it can be much more expensive..

Yes private sshool books can be much more expensive, my daughters ana sinif books are 210ytl and my sons for year 3 is 290ytl. However the most expensive ones are the English books.
The non-english books are 100ytl for ana sinif, 30ytl for year 3 - doesn't really make much sense does it. There are however 8 non-english ana sinif books for the 100ytl.

Re: Books for School
My experience and prices are based at our local government school. For the 1 'sinif' class 4 text books on handwriting and 12 reading books cost us 25 YTL. These are only over and above the books provide, free from the government. They are used as a back up and to provide extra lessons away from school. The books we buy are used in the class room curriculum. Private school books, certainly seem to cost so much more.
The materials for starting in ana sinif, as I remember, certainly cost a fair bit, but they lasted the whole year through. I will be back in the ana sinif boat this time next year.
Regards and good luck Angie.

We've got smartboards fitted in our school now, it shows the picture from a projector connected to a PC, it also works as an input device to the PC so you can write and draw on the board. It allows you to show interactive videos and software to the kids and let them interact with it on the board - it really grabs there attention which of course helps the learning process as the more a kid enjoys the lesson the more they are open to learn.
Our stationary list for the kids also runs at around 100ytl, more if you go for some of the brands they want.

Thats really cool.. I don't think schools in the Uk have this sort of equitment yet, not in my area anyway. I really like the idea of open learning and teaching children through their own curiousity which is why i didn't like the sound of these workbooks.. they sound quite structured. Plus I feel i can guide my child through a 'work book'. I would want a teacher to be someone who can inspire and excite and child to understand new things.
