Security of your property

Merhaba

It is my intention to buy a property in Turkey this year. I am not aware of any language that does not have a word for crime. What preventative measures do those of you who have bought places in touristic areas take, while you are there or away,to reduce the probability of being affected. What are the costs ? Are there any areas/types of property which are particularly more prone and therefore best avoided ?

I dont know about areas which are more prone but of course you are right in saying that nowhere is crime free.

Our apartment is in Altinkum where the majority of owners have the spanish type grills fitted to properties for peace of mind.

We decided against the grills and opted for a good quality roll shutter system. I'm afraid i cant remember exactly how much we paid but i believe it was in the region of £350-400 for the 2 bedroom apartment.

They have a good locking system and are surprisingly strong.

AS ABOVE GRILLS OR SHUTTERS AND A PROPERTY MANAGEMENT COMPANY THAT DOES CHECK WEEKLY NOT JUST STATE IT DOES , NOT BEING PARANOID BUT WE ALSO CHANGE OUR LOCK REGULAR (CAN NEVER BE SURE IF COPIES ARE MADE REALLY IF YOU DONT LIVE HERE ALL THE TIME)
WE DO LIVE HERE AND ONLY HAVE A PERSON WE FULLY TRUST HAVING SPARE KEY BUT STILL CHANGE LOCKS AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME!

As Brenda and Peter says grills or shutters would be advisable. If you are going to rent it out probably the grills would be better as could you rely or expect renters to shutter up when they leave? Also if just a holiday home then maybe on a security patrolled complex would be better. And definately change the locks periodically. As for location it could happen anywhere. Have read somewhere that a ground floor property is more at risk and yet have heard things happen when on 1st 2nd floor.

Wherever you buy I hope you will be happy and crime free.

If you use good quality locks they cannot be generally copied as they are security coded.

All,

I am much obliged to all of you for prompt and sound advice. Are complexes with security guards generally worth the service charge ?

Buying on a complex is personal choice and depends what you want from a holiday. Personally I find its piece of mind to know they make periodic checks of the property and of course the added bonus of maintenance of site pool etc costs shared by all owners. Again, its purely optional. If I were looking to eventually live out there I would not buy on a complex. If you have children a complex might be a good thing.
