Re: Planning to relocate to Altinkum

Hi Julie and Rick!

Welcome to Turkish Living....

First thing I would suggest is dont fall into the common trap of believing house prices here in Turkey are spiralling out of control - they are not.

Supply and demand will always affect the market but take my advice and dont make the jump until you have done enough research on all aspects of buying a property in Turkey.

You are definitely at the right place and many many members here will guide you and help you through many pitfulls that others have gone through in the past.

500 sterling a month doesnt seem much but depends on the lifestyle you intend to adopt.

Please have a look through many of the posts made on the forum - this will definitely give you more knowledge and more likely prompt you to ask more specific questions...

Have fun

Re: Planning to relocate to Altinkum

I would definitely recommend renting. That way you can do more research on costs and the suitability of the area and community you intend to move into.

There are many ex pats with children/teenagers and you are quite right to make plans in this respect too. For instance, just by you having residency here does not give your children the right to work without a work permit.

Without residency, children cannot be admitted to the Turkish education system.

Winter can be very difficult when all the razamatazz is over and many seasonal shops/restaurants and music bars have shutdown.

The language barrier.... How do you get a broken pipe fitted in winter when you cant speak Turkish....

All these things need to be considered and put in perspective to make sure that the final move for the WHOLE family is within your/their expectations of Turkish life.

Re: Planning to relocate to Altinkum

There are many Agents using the forum and I am sure you wont have to wait long before you get some rental offers

Residency

I have posted a document on here that outlines how to get a Residency Permit within a couple of days. Use the forum search.

You will soon make many friends here that have more experience of Altinkum than myself (I am in Kusadasi).

Once again, I suggest you read through the older posts

Re: Planning to relocate to Altinkum

Hi Julie and Rick,

1) If you shop very Turkish food is much cheaper than the UK and
better quality.
2) Utilities are also a lot cheaper
3) We have met the odd English teenager here in Altinkum who have settled well.
4) We are finding it difficult Learning the language but that could be our ageing brains.
5) We have had some problems when trying to make ourselves understood but with patience on both sides we have managed
It is very hard to say what is an ok budget as everyone is different in the way they live. Some would say you need £1000 a mth others as little as £400.
Your 15old daughter will potentially be the biggest spender.

What do we miss, very little really as friends and family bring things like bacon, oxo and other bits and pieces. Oh but I do miss not been able to go into a good book shop as I am an avid reader. Did bring about 500 books with me.
Now and then we would love a chippy tea

Merv! has given some very good sound advice

Re: Planning to relocate to Altinkum

Hi Julie I agree with all the above and first of all welcome to TL forum... There are far more properties than there are buyers at the present time so Triple price increase is all Tosh!!! The buying process is very simple and stress free unless your like me and a born worrier??..lol.. DONT bring your furniture or Car as it isnt cost effective and its so much cheaoer to get it all there as many members will tell you. I think you could live quite comfortably on £500 if it wasnt for your daughter????...lol.. Most folk I know live on less and manage to go out dining at least once a week too. Local produce is very inexpensive and if you shop wisely there will be no problems. We bought our property May 2004 and Altinkum is a lovely place but go for either a long stay holiday or just rent a place for a couple of months after the season preferably for cheapness and to see what its like when the season ends. I have the name of a contact if you need one. The other forum members Im sure will be helpful too so glean what you can and dont be too keen to part with your cash!
Regards
Chris & Karen
