was: Chestnuts now: Preparing for Christmas in Turkey
Hello all. This might seem a bit of a lightweight question, but our move to Calis is looming closer and we were talking about Xmas. Something we've never noticed on our visits are chestnuts. Can they be bought in Turkey?

Re: Chestnuts
Most definitely...
All over Turkey chestnuts will start appearing at the markets around November. Sold by the kilo as usual.

Re: Chestnuts
Quite agree...
Mmmm - so whats not available for Christmas
Cranberry Sauce
Horseradish
Sweet or Mustard Pickles
Packet Stuffing
Sausage Meat
Parsnips
Theres probably other essentials?
Aluminium foil sold in the retail outlets is a joke in Turkey. For all our roasts we use the catering foil from Tespo. Much better. Also the gravy sold in Tespo is very good quality and can easily compare with Bisto which is available from some outlets specialising in english produce but its prohibitively expensive.
Although you can buy Turkeys live from the market, having done so before and lost it after it ran away for the past couple of years I have paid a little extra and ordered from Banvit. Most of the butchers who sell chicken also have an account with Banvit and they deliver to most areas. Superb quality and highly recommended.

Very few shops sell greeting cards in english.
Have seen one in Altinkum, thats about it. But doubt they are open in winter.

Thanks again, most informative, M. Thanks also TPC, £1 a kilo is very reasonable!
You have got me thinking now, so is mincemeat (as in sweet mincemeat for mince pies) available?

You'll find and English greetings card shop in Fethyie for anyone who is interested.
Karens Kards can be found in the back streets between the harbour and the mosque.
Sorry about the vague directions lol

This train of thought is running, now! Beside wanting to know whether sweet mincemeat is available, can port be purchased? If so, is it horribly expensive?
