North Cyprus
With regards to buying a property in North Cyprus, I saw a couple of programs on TV about people that had bought property there and were now having problems with ownership, does anyone know if this is this still ongoing ?

Re: North Cyprus
Hi there,
I have lived in North Cyprus and have a property out there. It's not the greeks that are the cause of most of the worries but the unscrupulous British developers and estate agents(Gary Robb ands Aga Estates).
Mr Robb has sold hundreds of homes and taken the money and gone off to Thailand, fortunately, the TRNC government has frozen his assets as he tried to transfer the money out of the country.
There are also questions of land ownership-The GC's are always demanding their land back but it's not an simple situation and will never be easily resolved. There is a lot of Turkish land in the South of Cyprus-the whole of Larnaca airport is built on Turkish land.
It's up to every individual to decide if they are happy with buying on Greek land-I would never have bought a Greek house that was built before '74 and had been a Greek family home, nor would I have bought a very large plot and built on it myself, but I know loads of people that have done this and aren't worried in the least bit.
I was more than happy to buy an apartment on ex-Greek land and pay an amount in shared compensation if we ever have to, even though I think I have more chance of winning the lottery here than that ever happening.
The press here in the UK have done a lot of scaremongering and mis-representd the situation-the reporting has always been very one-sided in favour of the GC's-but then it always has been like that.
Hope this helps!

Re: North Cyprus
right yes there has been bad publicity bout houses here and unfortunatly my parents bought of gary robb,my wife and i have rented in catalkoy from a site 10 years old where we do not get no water,no electricity or no telephone.Gary Robbs houses some of them are still using generators but not all sites are like that and bearing in mind its the greeks who are the ones causing the propaganda.I can not help you decide on what you buy in north cyprus but it is still better than uk but bear in mind that if you do decide to buy in north cyprus be careful as people will take advantage at any opportunity including shops
but to finish it here as i hear this stories bout builders everyday it will be just as bad in the greek side as they are conning people too

Re: North Cyprus
hi my husband is from n.cyprus.(turkish cypriot)..there has been problems with the exchangd land..but the estate agents just tell every1.. theres no probs as its x changc land...but there are greeks on the south of cyprus who have pre74 tital documents..so you could be in a position.where you own the house but not the land ..we have houses there ..but because of the legal position we bought in Altinkum turkey ..as we didnt want trouble in the future..and even a 1 percent chance of trouble isnt worth the worry...so if you want to buy try and get pre 74 turkish..(like we have).and not exchangd...

Re: North Cyprus
Hi There,
the situation with regard to 'title' deeds to land in the TRNC has improved. The TRNC has now set up a 'Property Commision' which will hear cases from GC's and decide upon appropriate compensation-this has been approved by the EU and the UN.
I have just returned from the TRNC and where previously land with 'Turkish' or 'Foreign' title was more expensive, now, it is not particularly sought after.
Don't forget the GC's may have land in the north but there is much land in the south (Larnaca Airport for example) owned by TC's.
I have lived in Northern Cyprus-still have property there, and would have no problems buying more-or advising my friends if they wanted to buy there.
If there is anything in particular that you want to know please PM me.
Ann
