Import Taxes!
There have been plenty of discussions relating to T.V's, DVD's, Video Players and Hi-Fi Systems. It appears that although such items purchased in the U.K. will work in Turkey, they are subject to Import Taxes which I understand, can be quite high. Can anyone confirm either way that these taxes WILL be payable on entry, or is it a bit Hit and Miss at Customs. Do the Taxes outweigh the cost of replacing. Most of our "Electricals" were purchased earlier this year. We will be shipping various items over soon, and need to know if it is worth including any of the above.

Re: Import Taxes!
Adrian
We shipped some of our personal belongings over from the UK, and it took all day to clear customs, it was a nightmare, going from one department to another getting photo copies of all the paper work they issued etc etc.
When you get to customs they will already have the list you have provided telling them exactly what is in your crate, this would of been translated into Turkish, they will tax you on all of it what ever it is once they have valued it, i think the value had to be under 1500€ , then you would have no tax to pay if of course there are no electrical items. We bought clothes over ,picture frames with our photos and had to pay 50€ tax. They didnt see the computer, hair dryer and radio cassette we bought over as we didnt put it on the list so we were lucky thet didnt open the box it was all in other wise we would of had to pay tax on that too.
From what i remember the tax is calculated on how much they value the items at, so you have to work out, is it worth it, if you are bringing alot of electrical items out.
Hope this helps but i wouldnt want to go through that again.

Re: Import Taxes!
Many thanks Bryn (and Starman). That does help to a certain degree. At least I am able to calculate the approximate Tax levels to expect against what it would cost to replace. As most of the items in question are relatively new (less than a year) I will probably opt to take certain items and suffer the financial penalties. Don't see the point in taking an ageing Video Player(don't use it that much anyway, compared to DVD Player) or even the DVD Player, as these items seem to be getting cheaper by the day. The main items would be 28inch Flat Screen Nicam T.V and Home P.C. I suppose I could take them, (Video & DVD)and perhaps offer them as "gifts" against the more desirable items I would like to keep. Many thanks.

Re: Import Taxes!
The tax you pay is returned to you (reclaimed) after 5 years as long as you still have the items ie you have not sold them.
My opinion, for what its worth, is that computers are expensive here compared to UK, so bring them. TVs are cheap enough here and are taxed heavily, so buy here.
The dilema I had was that it is OK saying don't bring things, but I already owned and had paid for them and it was either bring them and pay tax or give them away and have to buy again. It is also nice to have my own things.
A tip on shipping is that once you cross certain weight thresholds, the extra cost is minimal. Before you decide to get rid of things, check with the shipper. I had 1500kg but how you are to work that out I don't know - they did it by weighing the load but it was impossible for me to estimate before they took everything away and consequently I had ditched a lot of things I would have brought over had I known.
