Living Costs

I am considreing retiring to Turkey. Can someone who lives there give me some idea of living costs.

I was thinking of a 3 bed appt. and would be doing all my own catering with the occasional meal out.

Also how are you experiencing the inflation rate in Turkey of 23%!!!

Tom,

I did read somewhere that the average retired Turkish national has a pension equivalent to one fifth of the average UK pension, I have no idea what the relevant figures are in these calculations, but I bet someone on here does know, for example, if you find out what is the average wage in Turkey then you can relate to how well off your pension makes you in Turkey as opposed to the UK.

I think you might be pleasantly surprised.

Hi Tom,

We have been doing our calculations for next years move and find the following is the average living costs based on todays standard of living, ignoring future inflation etc and Brits making the place more expensive!?

Average salary per month is £300- £400 (not including commissions) for an expat and consider enough to live on, pay house bills etc for apartment.

A couple with no children, 2 bed house, car running costs is approx £5000-£6000 per annum.

Couple with Children 3 bed house, car running costs is approx £7500 - £8500 per annum.

The above we worked in all bills like insurance, tax, clothing and going out once a week for meal and the odd drink, and still have a little bit spare. The most expensive part is as usual running the car, car tax is very steep in Turkey especially on Luxuary cars ( and a Ford Focus is considered a luxuary car!). Every day items are cheap as chips as long as you shop in the right place!

Obviously we calculated these costs based upon our own circumstances which will differ between individuals etc etc.

Regards
Dipps

I did say current living costs - we are building in a higher than normal increase in living costs above inflation over the next few years (2-7 yrs)owing to the increase of expats, then another hike increase owing to the move into EU and prices becoming consistent with other EU countries, therefore in 2013-2015 when I am 37, the question is will it still be as economical to live in Turkey at my age or will it be just as expensive as in London, or will it be time to move on again and be buying in up and coming Baghdad on the Euphatese or south Georgia on the Black sea?

We are intending to move to Turkey this year when we have sold our house. I have done a lot of research on the cost of living and when you take everything into account, general living expenses including food, elec/gas/water/tv/council tax etc, eating out (once a week) insurances, health insurance, residents permits, pool maintenance and holidays (yes we expect to go on holiday to see the rest of Turkey)we are budgeting £10000 / year for the two of us. I hope that with this we can buy plenty of Efes, gin etc and live happily.

Hi Malcom & Judy and welcome.

I think I will pack up and go now. I knew it was cheap enough to live there, but compared to rip off Ireland, I could live in extreme luxury!
