Renting experiences?

We are now fairly certain that we want to buy an apartment on a complex. We work long hours/periods, so we would only be able to visit twice a year until we retire
I have read some comments re: renting...
...not relying on it
...renting out your personal space
I can appreciate all of this but wondered how those of you who do rent out have found the experience?
...Is there call for it (we want to buy in Ovacik or Altinkum
...has it been a positive experience.
Hope this isn't too personal a question, as I can see what a dignified, private and easily offended bunch you are[]
Thanks again
Jackie

Will let you know at the end of the season Jackie - it's our virgin run. Have been stressed sorting it all, I think it is difficult when you aren't physically there to sort things.

Hi Murdo,

Like you, we bought our villa with no reliance on renting, that took a bit of discipline as you are tempted to go for that extra bedroom or larger pool etc.

Because we never thought we would rent our place to ' strangers ' we furnished it as our second home and everything we put in was of the very best quality we could afford. When word spread of our second home, a work colleague asked to rent it for a week, we thought about it and eventually agreed, that was 3 years ago, today, we now have to be pretty quick to book time for our own holidays because our villa has proved to be really popular, this year more than 50% of our bookings are from people who have been before.

The secret ? well strange as it may seem, if you do not need to rent you can be really choosy, for instance, at a push we could sleep 8 in our villa, but with 2 en suite bedrooms it is much more suited to 4, we have rarely taken a booking for more than 4 people at once, never for a group of singles, we don't allow smoking inside, etc. and so the people who have stayed have without exception had had nothing but praise about the villa and their time spent there.

Once again, returning to that point which is so important about not needing to rent has allowed us to plough back every single lira we earn back into the villa, we ask every renter not only what they thought ( have a look at the " Last Word " page on our website where there is a link to an independant site where people make there own comments on Villa Fleur ) and we then act on those comments and make additions and changes, if we think they are a good idea, of course.

So has it been good? well so far, brilliant ( he says touching wood ) it has not been all plain sailing, we got burgled last year while renters were in the property, this was mainly my fault, I had resisted those decorative window guards and door bars ! that has nown been put right and it did not put off our renters, they are back again this year.

Good luck, hope it works out for you.

Dear Rimms
your site is AMAZING. Lots of work gone into it, no wonder your villa is so popular.

Another question..(now you know why other half going grey)....is there any difference in renting potential between village complexes non-complex accommodation. We are really torn between the two.

We have a villa on a complex and for us that is great, there is always someone around to have a chat with, other children for the children to play with.We also have a pool bar on our complex and have social evening there.
But it's what you want out of a holiday,if you want peace and quite you are perhaps best to buy alone.
Having said that though there has never been a time when we have been in our place that we have thought it is too noisy or to busy.

Murdo, I agree with Sharon, although Serinkent is a complex, we only have seven English owners, 4 German and the majority are Turkish. I think this gives us the best of both worlds because our small complex retains a Turkish way of life.

But like everything, it is horses for courses, some renters want to be in complete solitude, others, and I think the majority, wan't good access to local amenities, people to talk to, have a drink with etc.

If I was buying specifically to rent, I would choose a complex.

Good Luck

Sharron/Rimms, think we will go complex route. Our children are 6 and 7, so nice for them if other sproglets aroung....Personally, I would have preferred a smaller complex but suspect we cannot afford that. Have you seen the Aegean Pines complex....wow!!!!! Bet theyre all sold before September (

Hi Murdo
That complex is being built in Yesilkent which is outside of Altinkum. The builder(one of them ) Dougie lives over here. They built a complex accross the road from us the Mege Pine Trees. They look nice but nothing like the origional plans,as they had a huge winding pool, and due to problems with the local council had to cut the pool very short.
