Exclamation Money Exchange

A word of warning. We have just got back from Marmaris after a a two week stay. During this visit we changed money twice using two different money exchange places. At both exchanges they tried to cheat us. We gave them the English currency and before they gave us the Turkish Lira back they counted it out under the counter. Fortunately we counted it ourselves to check it. On the first occasion we were 40 lira short, we told the woman who then counted it again under the counter and then handed it back to us - miraculously it was correct! The same thing happened again the next time we changed money, we were 50 Lira short. They count out the notes but gave us a 1 Lira note instead of a 50. We counted the notes in front of her, she took them back, counted them under the counter, gave them back to us - and again they were correct.

These are the kinds of experiences that give a very bad impression of a place - we have'nt experienced this before but you start to think that everyone is out to rip you off!

In future we will only change money at our bank.

Re: Money Exchange

Harry, why don't you just bring your debit card and get your lira from one of the ATM machines??

Re: Money Exchange

thats the best way to do it...use a plastic card.
also if anyone feels they have been cheated you can always go the the Zabıta with your complaint..they are the civil police and will usually sort things out...

Re: Money Exchange

Why dont you open up a NATIONWIDE bank account for your hols then you wont get ripped off and you will probably get a better rate too.

Re: Money Exchange

Didn't someone else put up a similar story at the beginning of the season? I must admit I didn't check my money when I changed it a few weeks ago, it was about a week into the holiday and i was relaxed!!!!! I then remembered the problem the other member had -I went into a panic got me money out - erm and yes it was OK.

I could have been ripped off loads of times during my stay - erm I wasn't for example the melon man at the market spent ages explaining - via signs and numbers to me -the cost of fruit, of course my Turkish is still shite but his English was better if only everyone was like the melon man? what I mean by that is he spent ages explaining the cost by kilo etc that doesn't happen over here as melon and such are usually fixed priced, erm I'd initially gone to buy via a fixed price and thought the price was cheap, erm he explained - nope the cheap price was by kilo - I went nuts in the market after that wow it is so easy to be healthy in Turkey

Bank cards seem to be the best option
