Any Gear . Petrol Heads

Not sure if this is the right forum. Would like to get a "cheap" second car. Something that has the most smiles per gallon. From the US so most of these cars are not available in the states and I have no experience with them.

Re: Any Gear . Petrol Heads

Hi ryan1428.
First, second hand cars in Turkey are too expensive, you'd better consider a new one.
Second, petrol cars consume too much, I have always preferred diesel engines: diesel prices are 10% lower than petrol, and diesel engines consume 30% less fuel. However, diesel cars cost more.
Third, the Turks all buy petrol cars and install GPL fuel systems. This is definitely a cheeper solution (GPL is 40% cheeper than petrol), but you spend $1000 on the system and have to say good-bye to the spare wheel, which will be replaced with the GPL tank.
And last but not least: in America there are few cars with mechanical transmission, can you drive such cars? Here in Turkey automatic trannsmission adds about 10% to the car price.

Re: Any Gear . Petrol Heads

Be very wary about LPG gas conversions. Many have been done by back street mechanics and they will not let you into a multistory car park with an LPG car (quite rightly too). I woulkd recommend a Ford connect vanette, reasonable fuel return and great for throwing something in the back (dogs/cement etc). This model was considered to be the next taxi in new York city.

Re: Any Gear . Petrol Heads

Petrol or Diesel Fiat Doblo's are cheap enough cars to run.
The cheapest second hand car in terms of purchase price and the best for the money (in my opinion), is the VW beetle. I recently bought a 74 vos vos (nickname for them in Turkish) and once you've got to grips with the clutch (which you may need to double-up when ascending gears) it's an easy car to drive. It's also cheap to maintain as parts here are dirt cheap. My car cost 10,000 Turkish lira, you can pick one up for less (and get yourself a second hand handbook and you're good to go). There's also a few Beetle associations, one based in Izmir, and they do events and tours every few weeks.

Modern petrol , non performance based cars are as economical as diesel , in real world usage.

Cars with LPG systems have to undergo a test to ensure their safety.

Re: Any Gear . Petrol Heads

Appreciate the response. Guess my use of the word "petrol head" has a different meaning than "gear head" in the US. I am a performance car enthusiast. In the US we are accustom to big horsepower. From what I am noticing is that throwing cars around corners are more the norm. Our first car will be a diesel and automatic cause my wife cant drive a stick. The second car will not be an every day driver. Just something to have "FUN" with. Thats why I used the "smiles per gallon" quote. Not worried about fuel consumption. It like the VW beetle but in performance form. I am not sure about modified vehicle in Turkey. What will and will not pass inspection.

Re: Any Gear . Petrol Heads

You may wish to look at the cost of road tax here in Turkey. It is linked to both engine size and age. the only way round it that I can see to keep money in your pocket and a smile on your face is Tesla S or a Mazda RX8, both available in automatic, but would you let the missus loose in them?

Re: Any Gear . Petrol Heads

I have operated everything from an 800 foot war ships, nuclear submarine, Military aircraft and heavy machinery. Sorry no trains. Looking for and older performance car. This is MY car. Not my wife. Know they are available. Looking for the subject matter experts in this forum.

Re: Any Gear . Petrol Heads

Ryan,

The best place for you to go is the Gazemir Oto Sanayi in Izmir - all the car enthusiasts hang out there, and all types and makes are catered for. You'll find the right person to advise you there.
On Sundays there used to be a large second hand car market near the sanayi too. not sure if it's still running but it would be worth checking out.

Good luck,
Charlotte
